Hardy Counters

These counters will be expended to overcome harsh Environmental conditions.

Sequence of Play

Perform the following steps each Mission Turn until the Mission is successfully completed or fails:

Soldier Turn

  • Roll for Environment

The other steps of the Sequence of Play are in the base rulebook.

Environment

Location cards with the "Environ" (Environment) Keyword first appear in WWII Russia Expansions #9 and #10.

Soldiers in these Location cards must endure particularly harsh environmental conditions.

To overcome the Environment, each Soldier in the Location must roll the noted value or higher on a 10-sided die at the start of the Soldier Turn.

Example: The Stream card represents a Fever Environment. Each Soldier must roll a 4 or higher to resist Fever.

A Soldier who fails the Environment roll must either discard a Hardy counter of the appropriate type, suffer a Wound, or suffer a Suppress.

Example: A Soldier fails an Environ: Hot roll. They may expend a Hardy Hot counter to negate the effect.

Due to Mission, Location, or Event text, it is possible for a Location to have more than one Environmental effect in effect at a time. When this happens, roll for all of them separately.

When you play a Mission in a Region with Environmental conditions on the Location cards, use the Hardy counters to record each Soldier's remaining Hardy. Soldiers begin with 0 Hardy, unless otherwise noted on their cards.

Example: Missions taking place in Russia have the "Cold" Environmental condition.

Additional Hardy counters can be gained through Service Record cards, Equipment cards, and Skill cards.

Once allocated, you cannot move Hardy counters to a different Soldier.

Keywords

The following entries are reproduced from the DVG Warfighter Keywords reference, the Keywords that govern Environment rolls and Hardy. Per that reference, a Keyword marked "Reference" has no game rule of its own and is referred to by other cards.

Environ(ment) x+ – A Keyword appearing on extremely inhospitable Location cards. Soldiers may suffer harm when in these Locations. Inhospitable environments include: Cold, Hot, Fever, etc. To avoid suffering harm, you must roll the indicated number or higher. Do not gain protection from Armors or Shields.

Enduring – The Soldier is immune to Environ effects.

Fire – The Soldier is resistant to Hot and Fire, but vulnerable to Cold and Ice. Add 2 to its Environ Hot rolls. When Attacked by a Hostile that can inflict Fire Attacks, subtract 2 from the Hostile's Attack roll. Subtract 2 from its Environ Cold rolls. When Attacked by a Hostile that can inflict Ice Attacks, add 2 to the Hostile's Attack roll.

Hardy – Soldiers expend Hardy counters of the appropriate type to fend off the harmful effects of being in a Location with an inhospitable Environment. "Hardy Any" means the Hardy counters can be used to fend off any type of Environment.

Ice – Reference. Appears on cards that use cold or ice to inflict damage.

Ice +/- – Appears on Hostile cards. Apply the noted modifier to Ice Attack rolls targeting the Hostile card.
