Which card do you take when several cards share the number?
The rulebook states the green-before-gold rule.

Take one of the green cards at random; only if no green card is available do you take a gold one. If the only card has a gold back, check that its green twin is in the Past or banished pile. Counting the cards of a number in the box is fine, and a pre-shuffle is unnecessary.
