Do you pay durability to use an item's banner, and must a brown icon match the action?
The rulebook says a banner needs an involved character using the item.

Yes, you must use the item, spending a pip in the Item step, for its banner to count; no matching brown icon is needed. A banner decided after the fact does not work, and the pip is spent whether or not the banner is ultimately applied.
