Components

  • 1 Scavenger player board
  • 1 Scavenger piece
  • 6 nest tiles (TTTLLL)
  • 9 egg tokens
  • 6 swarm tokens
  • 4 swarm cards
  • 4 infection cards

(The letter codes in brackets are printed on the source sheet and are kept as printed. The sheet does not explain them.)

Setup

Additional setup for Sub Terra: Incubation.

  1. Select the cavers and place them on the start tile, as normal.

  2. Take the following 32 tiles:

    • 6 horror tiles (DDDDDD)
    • 6 cave-in tiles (TTTTTT)
    • 6 water tiles (XXTTI)
    • 6 nest tiles (TTTLLL)
    • 2 drop tiles (II)
    • 2 stalagmite tiles (XX)
    • 4 ordinary tiles (TTLL)

This expansion does not use gas tiles, ledge tiles or squeeze tiles.

Translator's note: the source gives the horror tiles' name as "логово ужасов" (literally "horror lair") and the drop tiles' name as "обрыв". The sheet gives no English names for these tiles, so the names used here are the translator's.

  3. Shuffle the tiles and stack them face-down, placing the exit tile at the bottom of the stack so that it is last. Return the remaining tiles to the box; they are not needed.

  4. Form the hazard deck as follows:

    • 3 or 4 cavers: 4 each of earthquake, flood, cave-in, swarm and infection.
    • 5 or 6 cavers: 3 each of earthquake, flood, cave-in, swarm and infection.

Then deal the following number of cards into the face-down hazard deck, according to the difficulty and the number of cavers:

    Difficulty3 cavers4 cavers

Goal

At the end of the game, your team scores one point for each egg token on the exit tile or held by a caver on the exit tile. Then lose two points for each caver who did not escape the cave.

Translator's note: the source's wording for the second case is literally "or with the help of a caver on the exit tile". It is read here as eggs held by a caver on the exit tile.

Tiles

Nest tiles

When these tiles are placed on the game board, place one egg token or two egg tokens on them, as shown on the tile.

Cave-in tiles

In this expansion, when cave-in tiles are placed on the game board, immediately place a cave-in marker on each of them. If a cave-in tile was placed by the Explore action, the caver cannot move onto that tile and stays on the tile they are on (unless they are the Alpinist).

A cave-in marker can be removed by digging, as normal.

Actions

Each caver has the following new actions available.

Gather (1 action point)

Take an egg token from your current tile and place it on your player board. You can hold up to three eggs at the same time.

Discard (free action)

Move an egg token from your player board to your current tile.

Crush (2 action points)

Destroy the swarm on your current tile. It is returned to the supply.

Hazard Cards

The earthquake, flood and cave-in cards are the base game's hazard cards. The source does not restate their rules; use the base rulebook for them.

Infection

All cavers on a nest tile lose one health point. Then each caver loses one health point for each egg they are carrying.

Swarm

Place a swarm token on each horror tile that is within three steps of a conscious caver. Then activate all swarms, one at a time, as described under Swarms below.

(If there are not enough swarm tokens left in the supply, the first player chooses which tiles to place them on.)

Swarms

During each horror phase, swarms activate twice. Each time a swarm activates:

  • If it is on the same tile as a conscious caver, each caver on that tile loses one health point.
  • Otherwise, it moves one step towards its nearest victim, in the same way as horrors do.

Cavers cannot leave a tile that has a swarm on it.

Unlike horrors, a caver can share a tile with a swarm without losing health points. Also, swarms are not removed from the board when their nearest victim is too far away.

New Character: Scavenger

The Scavenger has been haunted by visions of a dark future. What is hidden in the cave now is a harbinger of things to come. She needs to extract as many samples as possible, so that her friends above ground might find a way to stop the approaching nightmare. Her ability to foresee events lets them learn about approaching dangers in advance. She can also collect eggs much faster than the other cavers.

Foresee (1 action point)

Look at the top card of the hazard deck.

Scavenge (1 action point)

Perform up to three Gather actions.

Translator's note: the source prints this table directly after step 4 with no caption. It is read here as the number of cards dealt into the hazard deck, as in step 5 of the base game's setup, because the source says to do the rest of setup as normal. A "–" means that combination is not played on Normal.

  • Do the rest of the setup as normal.
