What's New in Back for Seconds?

The Back for Seconds expansion adds 2 new mechanisms to Rival Restaurants.

1. Event Deck: Time to Spice Things Up!

Every other day, there will be a global event that applies to all players, forcing them to adapt their strategy and think on the fly. Players will have one day to prepare for each event.

  • STEP 1: At the beginning of Day 1, before MONEY and MOVE, draw the top card from the event deck and read it aloud for all players to hear. Then place the event card face up on top of the event deck. This event is not in effect yet. It will trigger at the beginning of the next day. Resume gameplay as usual.
  • STEP 2: At the beginning of Day 2, before MONEY and MOVE, move the event card to the event card stand. The event immediately goes into effect. Resume gameplay as usual. When Day 2 is finished (i.e. after COOK and COUNTER is completed), remove the event card and discard it.

Rinse and repeat this process of reading the event card one day and then triggering the event on the following day until someone becomes "The Wiener" and wins the game.

A few more things:

  • You cannot play Clam-Voyance to negate an event card.

  • If an event card contradicts a rule, the event card takes precedence.

  • Event cards take place every other day in the following pattern:

    • DAY 1: Reveal event card #1.
    • DAY 2: Event card #1 goes into effect.
    • DAY 3: Reveal event card #2.
    • DAY 4: Event card #2 goes into effect.

2. Basic and Gourmet Recipe Books: Now Usable at The Island!

With the inclusion of the expansion recipes, the Basic and Gourmet Recipe Books can now be used at The Island (during BUY and BARTER only), once per day.

In the base game, if you cooked a recipe and had the corresponding recipe book, you had the ability of doing a recipe draw: drawing 4 recipes and choosing 1 to keep.

In Back for Seconds, the recipe draw action remains the same. However, you can now also do a recipe draw while at The Island during BUY and BARTER if you have either of the cook book upgrades for the corresponding recipe type. This all must be completed during the time limit.

(i.e. If you are at The Island during BUY and BARTER, and you have the Basic Recipe Book, you may draw four basic recipes and swap 1 with your current recipe). Return all unused recipes to the bottom of the recipe deck.

  • If you do not like any of the recipes you drew, you do not have to swap.
  • After you've chosen your recipe (even if it's the one you had originally), return the others to the bottom of the recipe deck.
  • You must perform your recipe draw during BUY and BARTER. If you run out of time, you must discard all the recipes you drew and keep the recipe you already had.
  • You can use both Recipe Books during a single round of BUY and BARTER, but you are still subject to the time limit. You must use one Recipe Book at a time (i.e. you must finish one recipe draw before going on to the other).

Kitchen Squad & Chef Powers

The following chefs are additional NPC's for Kitchen Squad, Rival Restaurants' 2-player mode. Here are their modified powers:

  • FRIEDA BIERZELLER: When Frieda is in a market, any Active Chefs in that market must discard a required ingredient of their choice from one of their recipes. Does not work at the Mystery Mart or The Island.
  • LORD PRESCOTT T. WORTHINGTON III: All Active Chefs at the same location as Prescott must first discard 1 ingredient before buying anything today. Does not work at the Mystery Mart.

NOTE: NPC's are not affected by the Event Deck.

Chef Powers

  • ABUELA SALTADA: The Ancient One. Secret Family Recipe: When cooking, Abuela can substitute 1 ingredient in her recipe for another ingredient from the same market (except the Mystery Mart). When she does this, draw an extra garbage.
  • DOLLY BUTTERSCOTCH: The Dairy Godmother. Coupon Clipper: During BUY and BARTER, once per day, if Dolly buys 2 ingredients from the same market, she may take another one for free. Does not work at the Mystery Mart.
  • FRIEDA BIERZELLER: The Hammer of Hamburg. You Not Cook Now!: At the end of MONEY and MOVE, pick one chef at Frieda's location. That chef must give Frieda a required ingredient from one of their recipes. Does not work at the Mystery Mart or The Island.
  • KELLY CARBPOOR: The Spice Girl. Bazaar Tactics: At the end of BUY and BARTER, if an ingredient is about to expire at the market Kelly is at, she can take it for $100 less than the market price. Does not work at the Mystery Mart.
  • LORD PRESCOTT T. WORTHINGTON III: His Majesty. Game of Scones: At the end of MONEY and MOVE, all chefs at the same location as Prescott must give him 1 ingredient before buying anything today. Does not work at the Mystery Mart.
  • PITA POCKETDOPOLIS: The Greek Gastronomer. Hungry for Action: Once per day, during BUY and BARTER, Pita may discard 1 of his action cards to draw 2 and keep 1.
  • REGGAE TONY: The Pastafarian. Island Living: During BUY and BARTER, if Reggae is at The Island, he can take 1 shelf ingredient from any market for $100 less than the market price. Does not work at the Mystery Mart.
  • TIÊN TÚ NGUYỄN: Crazy Rich Southeast Asian. Whenever Tiên uses an action card, she can draw 1 ingredient from any (except the Mystery Mart).
