Special Game Modes

The Comic Book Extras contain three special game modes for Rising Sun: Ninjas of the Rising Sun, The Ichiko, and Merciful Conquest. Each mode can be added to a game of Rising Sun on its own.

Ninjas of the Rising Sun

Each Clan now has a ninja of the shadow guild secretly infiltrated in one of the Provinces during each Season. These ninjas can swiftly eliminate figures with a simple command. Bribe, bluff, and negotiate with other Clans to either avoid assassination, or direct it to where it won't befall you.

During each Tea Ceremony, as part of the diplomatic agreement between the Clans, each player chooses, in secret, a Province card that is marked with a War Number token in the current Season. Place the card behind each of your Clan Screens. This is where your ninjas will lie in wait.

At any point before the War phase, you may reveal the Province card you chose. If you do, kill any 2 figures in the chosen Province.

If you do not use your ninja, return the unrevealed Province card back into your deck at the start of the War phase.

Clarifications

  • Daimyos and Monsters can also be killed.
  • You may kill allied figures.
  • If an effect says a figure cannot be killed, then it cannot be targeted by the ninja.
  • If there is only 1 figure in the Province, you may still use your ninja to kill it.
  • If you activate your ninja in a Province containing only 1 enemy figure, along with figures that belong to your Clan, you must kill one of your figures as well.
  • You do not need to have presence in the Province to kill figures there.
  • You are not obliged to use the ninjas during a Season.
  • During the next Tea Ceremony, you may choose the same Province again.
  • You cannot reveal the Province card you chose to anyone until you decide to use it.

The Ichiko

The Ichiko are a powerful ally in War. They can communicate with the Shinto and Kami and aid you in battle, trying to predict the outcome of war and change the tides of battle in your favor.

At the beginning of each Tea Ceremony, each player must make a prediction. Choose, in secret, a Province card marked with a War Number token in the current Season and the Clan card of the opposing Clan you think will win the Battle there.

During the War Phase, after the Battle is resolved in each Province, if you predicted the winner correctly, reveal your chosen cards. When you do, take the corresponding War Province token instead of the original victor.

All prediction cards are returned to the deck at the end of the Season, and new ones will be made on the following Tea Ceremony.

Clarifications

  • In the rare case that two players predicted the same winner on the same Province, the player with the highest honor wins the prediction.
  • The winner can be your ally.
  • You can't choose your own clan.
  • For each Season, you must make a single prediction.
  • You may make the same prediction again next Season.

Merciful Conquest

Not all battles must end in a bloodbath. Sometimes, the greatest victory is gained by sparing your enemies. These special rules introduce such battles to Rising Sun.

During each Tea Ceremony, as part of the diplomatic agreement between the Clans, each player chooses, in secret, a Province card marked with a War Number token in the current Season, thus appointing where a special Battle will take place.

At the beginning of the War Phase, all players reveal their chosen cards. The chosen Provinces receive the following special rules when resolving Battles in them:

  1. The winner of the Battle immediately gains a number of Victory Points, according to the current Season:

    • 2 VP during Spring
    • 3 VP during Summer
    • 4 VP during Autumn
  2. When resolving the Battle Outcome, the figures of the losing players are NOT killed.

Clarifications

  • If more than one player chooses the same Province, the amount of VP given is not increased.
