Action Tokens Quick Reference Guide
Ask for a Tile (question-mark token): Ask each of the other players in clockwise order if they have a specific tile. If a player has that tile, they give it to you and draw a replacement tile immediately. If no one has the tile you asked for, you draw a tile from the bag.
Draw 3 Tiles (+3 token): Draw 3 extra tiles. Do not draw tiles again until you have less than six tiles in your hand.
Play 3 Single Tiles (three squares token): Play and score three single tiles from your hand, one at a time. Do not draw until you have played and scored all three tiles.
Take an Extra Turn (circular arrow token): Take one turn, draw your hand up to six tiles, and then take a second turn. You cannot use an Action Token on the second turn.
Trade Tiles (two opposing arrows token): Trade in as many tiles as you want to, draw your hand back up to six tiles, and then take your normal turn.
Select a Tile (star token): Take a tile off of the board and add it to your hand. You cannot take a tile from a Qwirkle. You canot take a tile that would cause other tiles to become disconnected from the rest of the board.
Rule Variants
You can decide to use only some of the Action Tokens. In that case you only put the Action Tiles in the bag that correspond to the Action Tokens you're going to use.
Or you can give a full set of Action Tokens to each player at the beginning of the game. The tokens can be used from the first turn and the Action Tiles are left out of the bag.
Components
6 black Action Tiles
24 white Action Tokens (4 sets of 6 different tokens)
Important note: Qwirkle Expansion 2 is for use with Qwirkle. Qwirkle is sold seperately.
Setup
Set up the game the same as Qwirkle. After each player has drawn a hand of six tiles, mix the six black Action Tiles into the tile bag. Place the white Action Tokens face up nearby.
Game Play
Game play and scoring are the same as Qwirkle with the following exceptions.
Whenever you draw an Action Tile from the bag, show the other players what tile you drew. Each player takes a white Action Token that matches the Action Tile that was drawn. Set aside the Action Tile and draw a replacement tile from the bag.
It is important to wait to start your turn until the previous player has finished drawing their tiles from the bag. They might draw an Action Tile that can help you!
If your hand is six tiles or larger at the end of your turn, you do not draw tiles.
Unused white Action Tokens do not score any points at the end of the game.
How to Use the Action Tokens
You can use one white Action Token at the beginning of your turn. The Action Tokens are described below. Once you have used an Action Token, discard it.
Ask for a Tile
When you use this Action Token, you ask each of the other players in clockwise order if they have a specific tile. If the player has the requested tile, they must give it to you. For example, you can ask the player to your left if they have an orange circle. If they have an orange circle, they must give it to you. If they don't have an orange circle, then ask the next player in clockwise order for the same tile. When a player gives you the tile you asked for, they immediately draw a replacement tile.
If none of the other players have the tile you asked for, then you draw one tile from the bag.
Draw 3 Tiles
When you use this Action Token, you draw three extra tiles. Usually this will bring your hand up to nine tiles. Play your normal turn. Do not draw tiles again until you have less than six tiles in your hand.
Play 3 Single Tiles
When you use this Action Token, you play and score three single tiles from your hand, one at a time. For instance, you could play a blue circle, a yellow star, and a green square, and score each one. The tiles you play can be played next to each other as long as they're played and scored one at a time. You do not draw any tiles in between playing all three tiles.
Example (page 2 diagram): This player uses the Play 3 Single Tiles Action Token. They play the green clover for 5 points, the blue star for 8 points, and the red circle for 3 points.
Take an Extra Turn
When you use this Action Token, you take an extra turn, right after your normal turn. Play one turn, draw your hand up to six, and then play your second turn. You use this Action Token on the first turn and you cannot use another Action Token on the second turn.
Trade Tiles
When you use this Action Token, you trade in tiles and then take your normal turn. Set aside all the tiles you want to trade. Draw until your hand has six tiles. Then put the tiles you set aside back in the bag. If you draw any Action Tiles, treat them as you normally would if you were drawing at the end of your turn. After drawing, take your normal turn.
Select a Tile
When you use this Action Token, you take one tile off of the board and add it to your hand. You can take any tile that's on the board with two exceptions. You cannot take a tile from a Qwirkle. You also cannot take a tile that would cause other tiles to become disconnected from the rest of the board.
After you've taken a tile off the board and added it to your hand, take your normal turn. At the end of the turn, draw until you have six tiles in hand.
Example (page 2 diagram): This player uses the Select a Tile Action Token. They take the yellow square off of the board. They then play the yellow square along with an orange square that was already in their hand. They use the yellow square to make a Qwirkle and score a total of 14 points.
Compatibility: Qwirkle Expansion 2 is compatible with and can be played with Qwirkle Expansion 1. If you play the two expansions together, when you use a Select a Tile Action Token, you can remove a tile that would cause other tiles to become disconnected from the rest of the board.
