Rules for Variability Cards
The Variability cards bring more special conditions (marked by darker-colored spaces) onto the Player boards.
During setup, each player receives three cards in their chosen color. Then they use these cards to cover up the pre-printed special double conditions, placing them with the purple side face-up. It is up to each player to decide how to place the cards.
Only the conditions to trigger the actions change, all other game rules remain the same.
The conditions on the cards in detail
Each condition is shown on the card by an icon (a shield). The icons are not reproduced here; the text below describes each one as the rules sheet does.
Food condition (one shield with a food symbol): To fulfill this condition you need to cover both of the spaces with Action tiles showing a food symbol. These symbols do not need to be of the same type.
Movement and discovery condition (two shields, an arrow and a binoculars symbol): To fulfill this condition you need to cover the left space with a tile showing a movement symbol (arrow) and the right space with a tile showing a discovery symbol.
Terrain condition (three shields, each in a terrain color): To fulfill this condition you need to cover each of the spaces with a Bonus or Action tile of the specified terrain type (e.g. a yellow symbol means covering the space with a Sand tile). Unlike in the base game, the tiles cannot be the same color, as indicated by the card.
Transcriber's note: the rules sheet names only the yellow terrain symbol (Sand). It does not print which terrain the green and red symbols stand for, so those colors are left as printed on the card rather than assigned a terrain.
