New Character Cards
Game Setup
- Place the Scribe and Merchant cards beside the game board. (With 3 players, remove the "Scribe +2" card from the game.)
- Shuffle the remaining Character cards (from the base set and from the expansion set) together, and draw 6 at random. Place them beside the Scribe and Merchant cards. These cards can be used during the game.
- Return the remaining Character cards to the box. They are removed from the game.
Scenarios
To make the game more interesting, you may choose a specific set of 6 Character cards. Here are some examples:
- The Curse of Amun: Amon Priest, Amon Merchant, Chief, Treasurer, Beggar, Trader.
- Intrigue in the Pharaoh's Palace: Amon Merchant, Royal Servant (2 cards), Royal Scribe, Wandering Thief, Priest.
- The Race on the Nile: High Priest, Treasurer, Beggar, Wandering Thief, Thief, Trader.
Priest
Players look at the last 5 cards of the draw pile (4 Gift cards and the Akhenaton card). They may exchange some of these cards for Gift cards they hold. Exchanges are one-for-one, and the highest value of the card received must be less than or equal to the highest value of the card returned to the draw pile. Finally, the player may decide the order of the 5 cards that are returned to the bottom of the draw pile.
The Akhenaton card is not a Gift card, so it cannot be exchanged. It is possible that no cards are exchanged at all.
Beggar
For each market on the board, the player may either take 1 Deben from the market tile, or turn 1 Gift card in that market face down.
A face-down Gift card cannot be bought, and it cannot be exchanged or stolen using Character cards. The card is turned face up again the next time that market is opened.
Example: A player uses the Beggar. They take 1 Deben each from Gizeh and Akhet-Aton (2 Deben in total), and turn face down the necklace card at Louqsor and the chair card at Abou Simbel.
Amon Merchant
The player may discard any number of Gift cards. For each card discarded, they gain 8 prestige points.
A double senet card ("Senet x2") counts as 2 Gift cards and has a value of 16 prestige points.
Amon Priest
After the final scoring (including the points from Deben and from Royal Seals), the player gains extra prestige points according to their rank (1st to 5th): 0, 6, 9, 12 and 15 prestige points.
The rank table is transcribed as printed on the card: 1st place 0, 2nd place 6, 3rd place 9, 4th place 12, 5th place 15.
Example: A player tied for 3rd place gains 9 extra prestige points.
This card remains face up in front of the player who selected it until the end of the game.
Royal Scribe
The player scores any number of their Gift cards, and gains an extra 1 prestige point for each card scored. The Gift cards scored may be of different types. The player does not have to score all the cards of a given type. Scored Gift cards are placed in the discard pile.
Example: A player who holds 3 chair cards (the only player who owns chairs), 2 statuette cards (owned by 2 players), and 1 cup card uses the Royal Scribe. They score the 3 chairs at 3 x 9 prestige points and 3 x 1 prestige point, 1 statuette at 8 + 1 prestige points, and 1 cup at 9 + 1 prestige points. The player gains 49 prestige points, and keeps 1 statuette card in hand.
Wandering Thief
The player may take the Gift card with the lowest maximum value from any market, including a closed market. (The Royal Seal stays on its space.) Then they place the Gift card they took onto the space where the gift they took was.
After this, whenever markets are closed, all players may buy this card in the same way as they buy Gift cards. A player who buys this card must use it immediately: they must exchange it with the Gift card of lowest maximum value in one of the other three markets.
After the Akhenaton card has been drawn, the Wandering Thief cannot be used on a completely closed market. A Wandering Thief card cannot be stolen using the Thief, and cannot be exchanged using the Trader.
Trader
The player may exchange up to 2 Gift cards from their hand with cards on the board.
If the card taken from the board has a higher maximum value than the card given, the player must place Deben equal to the difference on the market tile.
Memphis Harbor and Foreign Gifts
The new location and the foreign Gift cards can be used in any game with 2 to 5 players. In the 5-player game they must always be used.
Royal Seal tokens are never placed on the Memphis Harbor.
Character cards cannot be used on the Memphis Harbor. Because of this, the Beggar and the Treasurer cannot take Deben from it, the Wandering Thief cannot steal Gift cards from it, the Trader cannot exchange cards with it, and the High Priest cannot place an extra Servant pawn on it.
Game Setup
- Place the Memphis Harbor tile beside the board, and place 1 Deben on it.
- From the base set's Gift cards, remove 1 goldwork card, 1 necklace card, and 2 each of the statuette, mirror, harp and chair cards, and return them to the box. Replace them with 10 foreign Gift cards marked with the +1 or +2 symbol.
- Add a number of papyrus cards equal to the number of players. A papyrus has the value of "4 prestige points + 1 Royal Seal token". When a player buys a papyrus card, or gains one by theft or exchange (not from another player), they immediately gain the card and 1 Royal Seal token.
The papyrus card's "maximum value" is 4.
Playing with the Memphis Harbor
Only foreign Gift cards are placed on the Memphis Harbor. When drawing Gift cards to refill an open market, any foreign Gift card drawn face up is placed on the Memphis Harbor tile instead. Repeat this until the open market has 4 normal Gift cards.
After that, if both of the following conditions are met, players may buy the foreign Gift cards placed on the Memphis Harbor:
- At least 1 foreign Gift card was added to the Memphis Harbor.
- At least 4 foreign Gift cards are on the Memphis Harbor.
When the conditions are met, cards are bought (or half of the Deben on the harbor is taken instead) in the same way as when a normal market is closed, in order starting from the player who made the highest bid.
However, the Memphis Harbor is never "closed", and no Market Closed tile is placed on it. Foreign Gift cards that are not bought remain on the Memphis Harbor.
When the Akhenaton card is drawn, the final distribution of cards on the Memphis Harbor is carried out immediately. From then on, the Memphis Harbor cannot be used.
Example: At the start of the game, 2 foreign Gift cards are on the Memphis Harbor. A market is closed, and as the new market is filled, 2 more foreign Gift cards are drawn. There are now 4 cards on the Memphis Harbor, but no player has yet placed a Servant pawn there.
Black places a Servant pawn on the Memphis Harbor. When the next market is prepared, no foreign Gift cards are drawn, so there is no distribution: the Memphis Harbor has 4 cards, but no new card was drawn. Red places a Servant pawn on a higher-value bid square than Black, and Green places one on a higher-value square than Red. When the third market is prepared, 2 foreign Gift cards are drawn, and the distribution takes place on the Memphis Harbor. Green, who made the highest bid, must buy 2 of the 6 cards. Red and Black then take turns, each buying 1 card or taking half of the Deben on the tile.
Foreign Gift Cards and Scoring
Foreign Gift cards have exactly the same value as the normal Gift cards of the same type. They are not distinguished from normal Gift cards when scoring. Their maximum values are also the same when exchanging.
When scoring, each foreign Gift card gives a bonus of 1 prestige point (+1 symbol) or 2 prestige points (+2 symbol) to every card of the same type that the player holds, including the foreign card itself. The bonuses are cumulative.
Example: Red holds 2 foreign chair cards, with the +1 and +2 symbols, and 3 normal chair cards. Another player holds 1 chair. When scoring, each chair Red holds is worth 10 prestige points (7 + 1 + 2), so Red gets 50 prestige points in total from its 5 chairs.
Two-Player Rules
Although they are different colors, the 4 neutral pawns (each player takes 2) represent one "neutral" player. The neutral player holds no Deben, but it takes Gift cards and distributes Deben from the markets.
Game Setup
Set up as for the 4-player game, with these changes:
- Remove the "Scribe +3" and "Scribe +2" cards from the game.
- Each player takes 4 Servant pawns in their own color (red or black), and 2 neutral pawns of the same color.
- Remove 8 senet cards from the game.
- The starting player receives 10 Deben, and the other player receives 11 Deben.
Playing the Game
After placing Servant pawns (and after any market that this placement closed has been resolved), the active player may place 1 neutral pawn.
- A neutral pawn cannot be placed on a market where Servant pawns were placed this turn. (If the High Priest was used to place Servant pawns in two markets, this applies to both markets.)
- A neutral pawn cannot be placed on a bid square that would be the highest bid at that moment. For this reason, a neutral pawn cannot be placed on a market that has no Servant pawns on it.
When a market closes (or when Gift cards are distributed on the Memphis Harbor), each player performs one of the following actions for each neutral pawn they own:
- Take 3 Deben from the market tile (4 Deben on the Memphis Harbor) and distribute 1 Deben to each other market (not including the Memphis Harbor). If there are not enough Deben, distribute 1 Deben each to any markets.
- Take any 1 Gift card and place it beside the board. (The Royal Seal token is removed from the game.) Because this card was gained by the neutral player, it is considered to belong to a third player when scoring.
A neutral player may discard a Gift card (by using the Royal Servant), and may exchange cards with the neutral player. (Deben gained by the neutral player are removed from the game.)
After performing an action, the neutral pawn returns to the supply of its owner. It may be used again on later turns.
For the purposes of market closing conditions, a neutral pawn counts as a Servant pawn. The market on the right side of Giza (closed by 3 colors, or by 4 Servant pawns) is considered to have 3 colors placed, and is closed, when either of the following is placed on it:
- 2 Servant pawns of different colors + 1 neutral pawn
- 2 neutral pawns of different colors + 1 Servant pawn
If the active player has no Servant pawn left to place, then regardless of whether they have a neutral pawn to place, the player chooses 1 of the markets where they have Servant pawns, and it is closed immediately.
Five-Player Rules
Set up as for the 4-player game, with these changes:
- The Memphis Harbor is always used.
- Add the 4 cup cards (worth 9 prestige points each) to the Gift card draw pile.
- Each player receives only 3 Servant pawns in their own color.
- At the start of the game, the 1st to 3rd players receive 8 Deben, and the 4th and 5th players receive 9 Deben.
