What's It About?

The idea of teamwork is at the heart of Kneipenquiz. You play together against the game, which faces you with four opponents. Depending on the difficulty level, they are sometimes easier and sometimes harder to beat. At the end you must finish on the running track ahead of your opponents — that is the only way to win.

Setup

The game box is not just for storage — it doubles as your game board. Flip open the lid and the two-story game board is revealed. Pull out the two drawers. Inside you'll find the game components.

Before playing for the very first time, carefully punch the value tiles and the playing figures out of the die-cut sheets. Sort the value tiles by the colors on their reverse side and pack them into a zip bag each. Each playing figure consists of two parts: a body and a base. Plug both parts together so that you get three-dimensional playing figures.

How Good Are You? Choose a Difficulty Level

There are 3 difficulty levels in the game. Decide before the start of the game which one you want to play with. If you are playing the game for the very first time, it's best to choose the easiest level as a kind of warm-up. In principle, you have the following levels to choose from:

  1. Easy-peasy: You play against Astral, Guinnell, Paulis Bräu and Lammtreu. These are relatively tame opponents.
  2. Showtime: Now Murfy's Beer, Alsta Trunk, Bier Brause and Lindenburg are on the line. The opponents get tougher…
  3. In your dreams: Okay, bundle up! You can no longer afford any bigger slip-ups. Beer Lager, Helles, Kill Benny and Bear Beer want only one thing: to win!

Note: As in the pub, the simple wisdom applies here: the fewer players take part, the more demanding the quiz becomes! So choose your difficulty level with care. With only 3 players, Easy-peasy might be the best choice. With 4 or more players, you can safely venture into Showtime.

Game Preparation

Have you decided on a difficulty level? Then take the 30 matching value tiles, shuffle them well, and place them face down as two equally sized stacks on the supply space on the upper game board. Then draw 5 value tiles and place them number-side up on the spaces "Question 1" through "Question 5" on the upper game board. Take the playing figures matching the difficulty level, plus the owl, out of the drawer. Your playing figure is always the owl. Place all five playing figures on space "0" of the lower game board. You don't need the remaining playing figures; put them back in the drawer. Insert the quiz cards question-side facing forward into the slot of the upper game board — that's your card holder. Set the hourglass next to it. Keep the notepad and a pen ready.

Gameplay

You always play simultaneously and together as the owl team. Your goal is to finish on the running track ahead of your opponents by the end of the game. The game runs over 5 rounds of 5 minutes each. Each round you must answer 5 questions from one quiz card in writing.

Draw the front-most quiz card from the card holder. It's best to lay the quiz card on the table in front of you so that none of you can see the answers on the back. Turn the hourglass over and then read the questions aloud. From this point you have 5 minutes to write your answers to the questions on the notepad.

Tip: One of you should always keep an eye on the hourglass. Alternatively, you can of course also set the timer on your smartphone to 5 minutes.

What Do You Do With the Value Tiles?

The value tiles influence your position and your opponents' position on the running track. Each value tile shows either one of your opponents or the owl. The red, green and yellow numbers dictate how many spaces that playing figure moves forward on the running track (see "Scoring — Which Playing Figures Move Forward?"). It can well happen that in a round an opponent moves forward several times, or not at all. Does an owl show up? Then you're in luck — that's your bonus.

Now look at the value tiles on the spaces "Question 1" through "Question 5". The order of the value tiles matches the order of the quiz questions. You may rearrange the order of the value tiles as you like within the 5 minutes. Think carefully about which value tile you assign to which question. Swapping them is important because it lets you better influence your opponents. If you don't swap the value tiles, the original order applies once time is up.

End of a Round

Has the time run out? Then put the pen aside. You may no longer change the answers or the order of the value tiles. Turn the quiz card over and check question by question whether you noted the correct answers. Remember, only the answers you wrote on the notepad count.

Note: Your answers are correct if they correspond in meaning to the answers on the back of the card. You do not need to have noted text passages that appear in parentheses on the quiz card as part of your answer.

Scoring — Which Playing Figures Move Forward?

For each correct answer, you move the owl forward 1 space on the running track. For a wrong or missing answer, it stays where it is.

Now look at the 5 value tiles and move the corresponding opponent or the owl forward:

  • Wrong or no answer? Move the opponent forward on the running track according to the red number.
  • Correct answer? Move the opponent forward according to the green number.
  • Owl bonus: Is an owl bonus showing, and did you answer the question correctly? Very good! Then move the owl forward an additional number of spaces as given by the yellow number. For a wrong or missing answer, the bonus is forfeited.

Set the just-used value tiles aside and reveal 5 new ones. Then a new round begins.

The Game Is Over!

The game ends after the 5th round. There are always 5 value tiles left over at the end — they are removed from the game. Have you left your opponents behind and are you standing on the running track ahead of your opponents? Congratulations — you have won. Otherwise, unfortunately, you have lost — even in case of a tie. Better luck next time.

Variant: Playing Kneipenquiz Like in the Pub (For More Than 6 Players)

Do you have a large circle of friends? Then you can also play Kneipenquiz in teams against each other. Each team should have roughly the same number of players. You will also need a quizmaster, who reads the questions aloud to you, awards the points, and keeps an eye on the time. Each team chooses a playing figure and places it on space "0" of the lower game board. You don't need the value tiles in this variant — they are removed from the game. Each team gets one sheet from the notepad and a pen. And you're off!

You again play 5 rounds of 5 minutes each and answer 5 questions per round. For each correct answer, you move your playing figure forward one space on the running track with your team. In case of doubt, the quizmaster decides whether to accept the answer. You don't need the value tiles in this variant. The team that is furthest ahead on the running track at the end wins. In case of a tie, there are multiple winners.
