Does the Martian B side 'when you discard a gadget' trigger when a gadget I played goes to the discard pile?

No. It means a deliberate discard, such as discarding a card from hand. The card going to discard after you play it does not count. Exiling works wherever the gadget is exiled from, and the exhaust can only be used on your own turn.
