The River II (12 tiles)
The river tiles are placed first. The spring, the fork and the lake with the volcano are set aside. The remaining river tiles are shuffled face down. The spring is placed in the middle of the table. The players choose a first player, who places the fork near the spring. Then the players, clockwise, each draw a river tile in turn and place it to the left or right on one of the arms of the river. The volcano is played last.
River cards can be placed like normal tiles, provided they meet two conditions:
- there is no loop, and
- there is no "linking" of the arms of the river.
[Translator's note: the French sheet says "cartes" (cards) here. The river pieces are tiles everywhere else on the sheet, so the sentence is about river tiles.]
River tiles can be placed anywhere.
Each player may, as in the normal game, place a follower on the river tiles if he wishes. A follower cannot be placed on the river itself.
The player who places the volcano cannot place a follower on that tile and immediately continues with a second turn, that is, he immediately plays the first turn of the normal game.
If you play without the relevant expansions, the inn, the pigsty and the volcano have no special effects.
Notes on other expansions
The sheet includes the following notes. They refer to rules from other Carcassonne expansions, whose text is not reproduced here.
- Inn (Auberge): an inn next to a lake follows the rules on page 1 of the first expansion, Inns & Cathedrals (Auberges et Cathédrales).
- Pigsty (Porcherie): the pigsty gives the farmer who owns the field one additional point per city. This bonus counts in addition to the basic "pig" tiles of the Traders & Builders expansion (Marchands et Artisans).
- Volcano: the player who places this tile cannot place a follower on this tile and immediately places a new tile. The rules are on page 1 of the Dragon & Fairy expansion (Demoiselle et Dragons).
