Overview
The expansion includes 22 new cards marked with a "G" in the lower-right corner, 22 original cards, and six different game modes.
Game Modes
Monteleon (A)
Add an Expansion card. This mode makes minimal changes to the original game. Each player secretly chooses one card from the eleven new expansion cards and adds it to their deck of original cards before the game begins. All remaining expansion cards are removed from the game, and the game continues in normal mode.
Puerta de Toledo (B)
Individual deck. In this mode the Spanish player removes the card Molina y Soriano from the original deck, and the French player removes both cards, Artillery and Marshall Joachim Murat (choosing one of them as the first-turn card and returning the other to their deck, as in the original game). Then, combining their original and expansion decks, each player chooses five additional cards to use during the game. Once the choice is made, all remaining cards are removed from the game without revealing which cards were chosen and which were not. The newly formed decks of five cards are then shuffled by the opponent, and the game begins in normal mode using the original rules.
Note: each player will have only six cards available for use during the game. Remember: the Spanish player starts turn 1 with Molina y Soriano, and the French player starts with Artillery or Murat.
Monte de Principe Pio (C)
Random. This mode uses the original setup and rules with a single change: the expansion cards are shuffled together with the original cards, forming two decks of twenty-one cards each.
Plaza Mayor (D)
Draft. In this mode the Spanish player chooses the card Molina y Soriano from the original deck, and the French player chooses both cards, Artillery and Marshall Joachim Murat (choosing one of them as the first-turn card and returning the other to their deck, as in the original game). Then each player combines their original and expansion cards into one deck and shuffles it. The players then draw two cards at a time, choosing one to use in the game and discarding the other. These cards are placed face down in two piles: Selected cards and Discarded cards. Do not reveal your card choices to your opponent.
IMPORTANT: see the final note in the section "Draft Restrictions (Modes D, E and F)" below.
After both players have finished drafting, the Discarded cards piles are removed from the game without revealing the cards. The remaining cards are shuffled by the opponent, and the game continues in normal mode.
I officially recommend 2 de Mayo: Assault on Palace Grimaldi Expansion as a game mode.
Puerta del Sol (E)
In this mode the Spanish player removes the card Molina y Soriano from the original deck, and the French player removes both cards, Artillery and Marshall Joachim Murat (choosing one of them as the first-turn card and returning the other to their deck, as in the original game). Then each player combines their original and expansion cards into one deck and shuffles it.
Each new deck is randomly divided into two parts: one set of ten cards and one set of eleven. The set of ten cards is passed to the opponent, and each player sets aside the set of eleven cards for the time being.
Then each player takes two cards from the opponent's set of ten, choosing one for possible use by the opponent during the game and discarding the other. These cards are placed face down in two piles: Selected cards and Discarded cards.
After that, each player takes two cards from their own set of eleven, choosing one for use during the game and discarding the other. These cards are placed face down in two piles: Selected cards and Discard. Do not show your card choices to your opponent.
Both players repeat this process simultaneously until only one card remains in their own set of eleven. This card is included among the cards available for play.
IMPORTANT: see the final note in the section "Draft Restrictions (Modes D, E and F)" below.
Then each player gives the cards selected for play to their opponent. They are shuffled together with the cards that the opponent selected for play for you. The game is now ready to begin and can be continued as usual, using the original rules.
Palacio Real (F)
Take 2, Keep 1.
In this mode the Spanish player chooses the card Molina y Soriano from the original deck, and the French player chooses both cards, Artillery and Marshall Joachim Murat (choosing one of them as the first-turn card and returning the other to their deck, as in the original game). Then each player combines their original cards and expansion cards into one deck, which the opponent then shuffles.
The game now proceeds as usual, except that when playing cards in the Preparation phase, each player may take two cards: keep one for themselves and discard the other face up, so that the opponent can clearly see which cards were not chosen.
IMPORTANT: see the final note in the section "Draft Restrictions (Modes D, E and F)" below.
Draft Restrictions (Modes D, E and F)
IMPORTANT: these rules apply to modes D, E and F.
During the draft, when the French player draws The Mob Disperses or Executions by Firing Squads, they must select that card and discard the other. These cards are easy to identify by the red icon on them. In the unlikely event that both cards are drawn together, show both cards to the Spanish player. The Spanish player chooses which card the French player must keep.
Similarly, when the Spanish player draws the card Confusion during the draft, they must select that card and discard the other.
