Before the first game, carefully remove the die-cut pieces from the frames. The 10 blank tiles are not needed for the game; players may use them to bring their own ideas into the game.

The expansion contains:

  • 12 employees, white
  • 30 donation tiles ("Spende")
  • 20 point tokens
  • 20 square offer tiles (with an X symbol on both front and back), of which:
    • 8 animal tiles for Zooloretto (front: green)
    • 4 vending stalls for Zooloretto (front: brown)
    • 8 animal tiles for Aquaretto (front: blue)
  • 1 offer board
  • 5 office boards
  • 5 expansion boards "Sponsor Enclosure"

In addition to the material of this expansion, the material of the base game is needed.

Note: the office board shows 4 office spaces. Employees can be placed on these office spaces during the game. The Sponsor Enclosure on the expansion board has 3 spaces for animal tiles.

Note: if Zooloretto Boss is played together with Zooloretto exotic, the office board and the Jungle board from exotic can be connected.

Setup

Each player receives:

  • one office board, which he places face up at the top right, next to the zoo board of the base game
  • one expansion board with a Sponsor Enclosure, which he places face down to the left of the expansion board of the base game
  • 2 donation tiles

The remaining donations go to the bank.

The point tokens are placed in the middle of the table as a supply.

The offer board is placed face up in the middle of the table.

The offer tiles are placed face up on the offer board. They can be recognized by their grey back and the X symbol on the front. If there are fewer than 5 players and the game is played without Aquaretto, first remove from the offer tiles all animal types that are not in play. Those tiles go back into the box.

The employees are placed on the offer board.

Game Play

The usual Zooloretto rules apply, with the following additions.

Note: the printed rulebook presents only the money action (C) of the turn. The other turn options are governed by the base game rules.

C. Carry Out a Money Action

I. Remodel

Move: For 1 coin paid to the bank, the player may move one of his employees to a free window on any other office space.

II. Purchase or Surrender of a Tile

Purchase: For 2 coins or 2 donations paid to the bank, the player may buy an offer tile or an employee from the offer board.

Caution: coins and donations cannot be mixed for this purchase!

An offer tile must be placed immediately into the player's zoo. An employee must be placed immediately on a free window of an office space of the player's choice. He may not place more employees on an office space than are allowed there (see also: Bonus for Employees).

Note: donations are "earmarked". They may be used for purchases from the offer board. Other money actions are not possible with them.

The printed rulebook heads this section "Purchase or Surrender of a Tile", but prints only the purchase half. The surrender half is not printed here and is not transcribed.

III. Expand the Zoo

The player pays 2 coins to the bank and covers the expansion board with the Sponsor Enclosure. The Sponsor Enclosure counts as a normal enclosure.

Note: this means that animal tiles can, for example, be moved into the Sponsor Enclosure with a money action, and in a game with Zooloretto XXL the animals of a full Sponsor Enclosure can be given to visiting zoos.

Last Space in the Sponsor Enclosure Filled

Each time the player fills the last space of his Sponsor Enclosure, he receives as a bonus one donation from the bank and one point token from the supply.

Exception: if all spaces of the enclosure are filled as a result of the remodel action Exchange, the player receives no bonus for it.

If there are no donations in the bank or no point tokens in the supply, the player cannot receive them either.

Bonus for Employees

A. Donation Collector

If the player has an employee on the office space at the far left, he receives one donation from the bank each time he receives one or more coins as a bonus for filling the last space of an enclosure.

Example: Anne has a Donation Collector. She places the fifth animal tile in her five-space enclosure and receives two coins for it. In addition, she receives one donation from the supply.

The player may have at most one Donation Collector.

Note: for coin tiles from the transport truck, or for coins that the player receives through the purchase of an employee, the player does not receive a donation.

B. Sales Manager

If the player has an employee (A) on the second office space from the left, he receives 1 additional point during scoring for each type of vending stall on a stall space. If he has two employees there (A+B), he receives 2 additional points for each type.

Example: Bert has three different types of vending stalls and two Sales Managers. For the stalls he receives 12 points in total: 3 (stall types) x 2 = 6 points as usual for the stalls, plus 3 (stall types) x 2 (Sales Managers) = 6 points.

The player may have at most two Sales Managers.

C. Purchaser

If the player has an employee (A) on the third office space, he receives 1 additional point during scoring for each tile with an X symbol. If he has two employees there, he receives for the second employee (A+B) 3 additional points per tile with an X symbol, for a total of 4 additional points.

The Purchaser gives no points for tiles with an X symbol in the barn.

Example: Claus has two Purchasers and two tiles with an X symbol. He receives 2 x 4 = 8 points for the Purchasers.

The player may have at most two Purchasers.

Note: the first Purchaser must be placed on the left window ("+1").

D. Press Officer

If the player has an employee (A) on the office space at the far right, he receives 2 additional point tokens from the supply each time he fills the last space of the Sponsor Enclosure. If he has two employees there (A+B), he receives 4 additional point tokens.

Example: Dirk has two Press Officers and fills the Sponsor Enclosure. As usual he receives 1 donation and 1 point token. For the two Press Officers he receives an additional 2 x 2 = 4 point tokens.

If there are no point tokens in the supply, the player cannot receive them either.

The player may have at most two Press Officers.

Moving Employees

When the player moves an employee, he may, for example, turn a Press Officer into a Donation Collector (see also: Remodel).

Scoring

Animal tiles in the Sponsor Enclosure give no points, not even through an adjacent vending stall.

Each point token is worth 1 point.

Tactics

The Sponsor Enclosure seems very worthwhile at first glance, especially if one can use it effectively with two Press Officers. However, the high cost restricts one's options for a long time. Also, the point tokens can quickly run out. The Donation Collector makes it possible to get more donations. The earlier one gets him, the more he is worth.

Sales Managers bring extra points for vending stalls in a simple way. A player who buys stalls from the offer board should take care not to end the game with too many of them.

Two Purchasers bring a much greater advantage than only one. But they are only worth it if one also buys the corresponding offer tiles. For this tactic one needs a lot of money and/or donations!

Do not forget: especially near the end of the game it can be very worthwhile to move employees.

Zooloretto Boss with Aquaretto

Employees from Aquaretto may only be placed in the water park.

Employees from Zooloretto Boss may only be placed on the office board of the zoo.

The Purchaser gives no points for tiles with an X symbol in the depot.

Zooloretto Boss with Zooloretto XXL

If the Sponsor Enclosure is full, the player may give these animals away to a visiting zoo.

Combining Expansions and Variants

Zooloretto Boss can be combined freely with several other expansions. Recommendations for combining several expansions with the base games, and much more, can be found at www.zooloretto.com.
