Components

Four different colored decks of 36 cards each.

Setup

Each player takes a deck and sets aside all of the zombies, guns, and cars. Shuffle the remaining cards and place 10 face down in a stack to form the House. Place three more cards face up in a row to the right of the House to form Escape Routes.

Shuffle the zombies, guns, cars, and remaining people to form your draw deck, the Streets.

The center of the table is the scoring area, where people get in cars to escape. Each player needs a space for his/her Dead Pile, for dead people and cards removed from play.

When you're set up, place your draw deck in one hand and your other hand on top of the House.

When everyone is ready, begin the game with everyone flipping over the top House card.

Playing the Game

You are trying to move your people cards from the House, Escape Routes, and Streets pile into cars in the center of the table. There are no turns, everyone will be racing to get their cards played. You may only move your own cards. The only time you may place your card upon another player's card is in the Car piles.

Draw three cards and place them on top of each other to the right of your Escape Routes to form your Streets pile. Keep working on the top card until you can't do anything else, then draw three more cards and place them together on top of the Streets pile. Once you are through all the cards, pick up the pile, flip it over (do not shuffle), and start again with three cards.

Car cards start new Car piles. Anytime a car shows up, you may place it into the center to start a Car pile. Once placed, any player may place a 1 card matching the color of the card on top of the car. Once the 1 is played, any player may place a 2 card matching the color and suit (all cards of a suit are one color) on top of the 1, and so on, counting from 1 to 2 to 3, up to 6. You may place cards from the tops of the House, Escape Routes, or Streets piles into the Car piles.

Cards on top of the House or Streets piles may also be placed into Escape Routes. They may be placed in an empty Escape Route, or onto a card already there of a different color, with one number higher. Example: The 5 of Skulls card is blue and may be placed upon a 6 of Cleavers or 6 of Hearts card, both of which are red. There is no limit on how many cards are stacked on top of each other, but there may only ever be three Escape Routes per player.

Cards on top of the Escape Routes may be played into the Car piles, as noted above. They may also be shifted to other Escape Routes as long as they are placed legally (i.e., onto a card of a different color, one number higher, or in an empty space). You may move more than one card at a time. Example: You may move a red 3 of Hearts and a blue 2 of Bones off of a blue 4 of Skulls and onto either an empty space, or a 4 of Bones. You may not move a card below other cards without also moving the cards on top of it. Example: You may not move a 2 of Bones onto a 1 of Bones in the Car pile if the 1 of Hearts is on top of the 2 of Bones. You must find a legal place to put the 1 of Hearts first.

Special Cards Rules

Zombies

Any time a zombie card shows up on the top of your Streets pile, it will try to eat the card below it. If there is a person card below the zombie, place the zombie and the eaten person in your Dead pile. Zombies can't eat cars, guns, or other zombies. Zombies only eat brains. If there's a car, gun, or zombie under a zombie, leave the zombie there.

Shotguns

  • Hold - When a shotgun shows up on the top of your Streets pile, you may place it on top of a person in your Escape Route stacks. No further cards can be placed on this Escape Route while someone is holding a shotgun, and the person holding the shotgun cannot move to a Car pile without getting rid of the shotgun.

  • Shoot/Discard - If a zombie shows up on the top of your Streets pile and one of your people is holding a shotgun, you may shoot the zombie. Place the zombie card in the Dead pile and the shotgun on top of your Streets pile. The zombie does not eat any person below it; you saved a life (and a point). Do not use the card revealed beneath the zombie once you shoot it, just place the gun directly on top. You cannot immediately have another person hold the shotgun, you must place three cards from your draw deck to cover the shotgun.

  • Remove/Shuffle - Whenever someone is holding a shotgun, you may place the shotgun in the Dead pile in order to shuffle your Streets pile. You must then immediately shuffle and draw three cards to start a new Streets pile.

Grandmas

We all love our Grandmas, but sometimes they get in the way. They're old, frail, and perhaps they just weren't cut out for a life filled with zombies. You may voluntarily kill off Grandma (place card number 6 in the Dead pile). This could be useful if she's standing in the doorway of your House and you can't get her out.

Ending a Round

When any player has removed the last card from his/her House, they call Stop and no more cards may be moved. The round is over, and players move on to scoring.

Scoring Points & Winning the Game

At the end of each round, flip over the Car piles and sort them by color. Players score 2 points for each escaped person in a Car piles. Players lose 1 point for each card left in their House and each person in their Dead Pile. Other cards are not scored.

In the example above, Diane placed 5 people in the center scoring piles (10 points). She failed to save 2 people in her House (-2 points), and 2 people were eaten by zombies (-2 points). She scores 6 points this round.

The game ends when a player reaches 66 points. Whoever has the most points when the game ends is the winner. Ties are broken by playing another round.
