Rules of Play

Object of the Game

Make a fun choice, then speak up and tell everyone why you chose it. The first player to reach the Finish Line wins.

Equipment

"You Gotta Be Kidding" contains one game board, 100 "Would You Rather" Cards, 4 player pawns, 4 Choice Tokens, one die, and one Challenge Card Kit (with 15 Challenge Cards, one 90 second sand timer, one Red Chili Pepper toy, one pencil, and a drawing pad).

Don't forget to activate the Chili Pepper by removing the "Pull Tab".

Start of Play

  1. Shuffle the "Would You Rather" Cards and place this deck on the table.
  2. Shuffle the Challenge Cards and place the deck face down on the table as well.
  3. Each player chooses a player pawn and a Choice Token. Place your pawn on the correct colored "Start" space.
  4. Play moves in a clockwise direction. The youngest player goes first.
  5. Each turn begins with a roll of the die. Roll the die and move your pawn to land on either a Number Space or a Challenge Space. During your turn you are "The Roller".

Game Play

The Number Space

If your roll takes you to a Number Space, do this:

  • Pick a "Would You Rather" Card. Read out loud the "Would You Rather" question that matches the number you landed on. It is OK to pass the card around for other players to see.
  • Each player should now make his or her secret choice by placing his or her Choice Token ON THE TABLE so that "Choice #1" or "Choice #2" faces up.
  • All players should be careful to completely cover their tokens with their palms. KEEP YOUR PALMS FLAT ON THE TABLE ... SWITCHING YOUR CHOICE IS CHEATING.
  • Once everyone is finished choosing, they all should keep their tokens covered while you (The Roller) AND ONLY YOU, uncover your token and explain why you made your specific choice.
  • Once you have explained your choice, you now try to guess, ONE PLAYER AT A TIME, if each other player agrees or disagrees with you. Everyone, except you, should still have their Tokens covered. You get to move forward ONE bonus space for each correct answer.

For Example ... in a game with Susie and Bob as players, with Susie as The Roller:

  • Susie uncovers her token and then explains why she made her choice.
  • Next, Susie looks at Bob and says, "I think Bob disagrees with me."
  • Bob then uncovers his token and if Susie is correct then she may move her pawn forward one space as a bonus.
  • Susie then moves to the next player and repeats the process.
  • After each player has uncovered his or her token and Susie has moved her pawn forward as her bonus for each correct guess, her turn ends and play moves clockwise to the left.

IMPORTANT RULE: Your turn always ends immediately after you take your bonus moves ... even if these moves take you to a Challenge or Lose A Turn Space.

The Challenge Space

If your roll takes you to a Challenge Space, do this:

  • Pick a Challenge Card and read the entire Challenge Card OUT LOUD, before you do anything, so that everybody understands.
  • Then, do what the card says and try to successfully complete your challenge.
  • If you complete the challenge successfully, move your pawn forward exactly as the Challenge Card says.
  • Each time you successfully complete a challenge, you take your bonus moves. After a challenge, your turn ends whether you succeed or not. You must wait until your next turn to roll again.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Repeating challenges is common and perfectly OK. (6 different Challenges are included in the 15 card deck.) Challenges are meant to be read and completed quickly ... 3 minutes or less.

Winning the Game

A player wins the game immediately after he or she crosses the Finish Line.

You Must Choose!

The phrases "I won't choose either," "Neither one" and / or "Who cares?" should never be heard while playing "You Gotta Be Kidding!". You must make a choice no matter how bad your choices may be.

Team Play

"You Gotta Be Kidding!" can be played with teams if you have more than four players. Each team should make their choices together ... one choice per team. But make sure you keep your team meetings short so that the game doesn't move too slowly. Use the timer if you need to.

Vacations and Car Trips

The "Would You Rather" Cards in this game are fun to take with you on vacations and car trips. Take them with you and have fun laughing and explaining to your friends and family why you make the goofy choices that you make.

Common Sense

These questions are obviously not real. Don't take any of them seriously. And everyone should know that trying to do or act out any of the questions on the "Would You Rather" Cards would be really dumb and might cause you to get hurt or sick. DON'T DO ANY OF THEM! The questions are fun to talk about, but dumb to do.
