In the Recovery step, do all my assistants in the area return, even if they added nothing?
The rulebook says to return ALL assistants regardless of count.

Yes. Every one of your assistants in the area where you acted goes back to your hand, including those placed there by a bonus, and even when the action produced nothing. If you want to choose which ones to keep, return your President to hand instead.
