Components

  • 80x Start Cards (10 per player)
  • 8x Playerboards
  • 15x Update Cards
  • 40x Token (5 per player)
  • 8x Randomizer (character) cards
  • 4x Coins

Setup

  • Place 1 coin in the middle of the players.
  • Shuffle the randomizer (character) cards and place them as a tournament tree (see Tournaments below).
  • Both players receive their shuffled deck consisting of the same 10 cards.
  • Both draw 5 cards at random.
  • The remaining 5 cards are added to the draw pile.
  • Place:
    • Start stats: 1 Energy, 0 Stone, 0 Victory.
    • 2 Blockades (at Blockade Position 1 and 2 on the playerboard track).
    • Place the Update deck shuffled next to the players.

Gameplay

  1. Both players look each other in the eye (trash talk allowed) and then play 1 card face down.
  2. Both players reveal their cards at the same time and resolve them.
  3. Discard played cards to your own face-up discard pile (to the right of the player board). Place the discard pile so that the corner symbols of all cards are visible!
  4. Both players draw +1 card from the draw pile. Draw pile empty? Then you don't draw a card!

Repeat steps 1) to 4) until...

1 player is at 0 Energy! The other player gets +1 Stone. The player with 0 Energy raises to his maximum Energy value (left side of Blockade) and puts the coin back in the center. Everything else remains as it is. The game continues until...

1 player has +2 Victory. Victory! As a reward, he may draw 2 Updates, chooses 1 (the Update replaces the same card type, a deck always remains at exactly 10 cards). The loser receives the unchosen Update and also exchanges it for a card of the same card type in his deck.

  • Play against the next opponents in the tournament. Blockades and Upgrades always remain as they are (but you start against each new opponent with a reshuffled complete deck, 5 new cards in hand and a maximum possible Energy and 0 Stone / 0 Victory).
  • Whoever wins the final becomes the new Yokai champion!

Tournaments

Shuffle and place the randomizer cards of all characters in the game into a tournament format and play a tournament. If there is an odd number of players, the player who has to take a break always receives 1 Update and 2 Upgrades for their break.

Sample: 8 players — Winner & Looser

4x 1vs1 parallel. Winner and Looser brackets, at the end the winners of the Winner and Looser brackets will compete in the final!

2 players: Best of 3

Whoever wins 2 out of 3 "Best of 3" duels becomes the champion! So you play 3x Best of 3. Turn the 3 unused coins to the side with the "1" visible, you will always receive these if you have won 1 Best of 3. Whoever has 2 of them is Yokai champion!

Liga

All participants compete against each other once in a Best-of-Three match. With 3-6 players, the winners of the Best-of-Three duels always draw two Updates and choose one of them; losers do not receive any Updates!

With 7-8 players, only a 2:0 victory will give you the opportunity to draw 2 Update cards and select 1 from them. Losers do not receive any Updates!

Starting Cards

  • (3x) Refresh Stone: Reload Stone +1, upwards (but never cross the Blockade).
  • (3x) Block: Prevent -1 Energy if opponent plays Sling Stone, or draw 2 cards.
  • (2x) Sling Stone: (cost: -1 Stone down, otherwise not playable): target gets -1 Energy if target does not have Block. Both shoot? Only the one with the coin deals damage, both still pay -1 Stone!
  • (1x) Upgrade: Blockade 1 on next Energy Blockade (cost: -1 Stone, otherwise not playable), or Blockade 1 to the right on next Victory Blockade (cost -1 Stone, otherwise not playable). All Blockades already removed? Draw 1 card instead.
  • (1x) Collect: Shuffle the discard pile into the draw pile (including this card). Receive the coin (from the center or from your opponent). If both players play this card, the coin stays where it is!

Update Cards

  • (2x) Refresh Stone: Reload Stone +2, upwards (but never cross the Blockade).
  • (3x) Block: Prevent -1 Energy if opponent plays Sling Stone. Draw 2 cards.
  • (3x) Sling Stone: (cost: -1 Stone down, otherwise not playable): target gets -2 Energy if target does not have Block, does not immediately bring target 2x to 0 Victory! Both shoot? Only the one with the coin deals damage, both still pay -1 Stone!
  • (1x) Upgrade: Blockade 1 on next Energy Blockade and Blockade 1 to the right on next Victory Blockade (cost -1 Stone, otherwise not playable). All Blockades already removed? Draw 1 card instead.
  • (1x) Collect: Shuffle the discard pile into the draw pile (including this card). Receive the coin (from the center or from your opponent). If both players play this card, the coin stays where it is! Draw +1 card.

Sample Turns

Sample 1

Skull plays Refresh Stone and advances her +1 Stone. Murray plays Block and draws +2 cards. Both discard their played cards onto their discard pile and draw +1 new card from the draw pile.

Sample 2

Murray plays Upgrade, sets his 1 Stone to 0 and advances his Blockade (Energy Blockade) by 1. As he has already done this once in a previous round, the Blockade (Energy) now moves behind 2 Energy to 3rd Blockade place.

Skull plays Sling Stone, sets her 1 Stone to 0 and successfully removes -1 Energy from Murray, Skull receives +1 Victory as Murray is at 0 Energy. Murray now starts at his new maximum value of Energy and the coin is returned to the center of the table. Both discard their played cards to the discard pile and draw +1 new card from the draw pile.

Sample 3

Murray plays Collect because his deck is almost empty. He shuffles his discard including the Collect one in his draw pile and receives the coin that was just with Skull.

Skull plays her already received Update card (Upgrade) and receives +2 Stone, since she has already upgraded her Blockade (Energy) twice. Both discard their played cards to the discard pile and draw +1 new card from the draw pile.

After a few turns Skull has managed to get 2x Murray to 0 Energy and thus has 2 Victory. Skull has won and will compete against the next winner in the tournament. Because she has won, she may draw +2 Updates, choose 1 of them secretly and exchange it for a card of the same type from her deck. The card that was removed is no longer needed for this tournament. Murray receives the unchosen Update as a consolation prize and may go through the same process as Skull, except that he had no choice. If it is 1 Update, which he already has, for a card that is only 1x in the deck, he may draw +1 new one and shuffle back the first received Update.

The next duels will match Skull against Bob (Winner bracket) and Murray against Dan (Looser bracket). While their Upgrades and Energy stay, as well as the Updates in their decks, the decks are prepared ready again as new draw piles with all 10 cards. All players start with their maximum allowed Energy, with 0 Stone and 0 Victory.

Epic Tournament (16 players)

If you own this game twice, you can play 2 8-player tournaments at the same time. The winners of both tournaments will then enter the final!
