Basic Rules

YAGO POOL is a board game with nine holes arranged diagonally in three rows in the upper part of the board. In front of the holes is the YAGO POOL triangle, and in front of that is the starting point (Picture 1).

The game is played by two players (as a variant, teams may of course also be formed to play against each other). One player plays with five yellow balls and one player with five red balls. The blue ball is the opening ball. It is set in motion by a strike with the fingertip (usually the index finger).

Sunk balls remain stuck in the holes and can afterwards also be used as obstacles or as targets for the opening shot. A player's own balls sunk in the holes may be shot at in every phase of the game.

The triangular template for setting up the balls is placed on the YAGO POOL triangle. The yellow and red balls are arranged on the YAGO POOL triangle in the prescribed layout. The template is removed carefully so that the balls stay in place. They should continue to touch one another. The blue ball is placed on the starting point (Picture 2).

At the beginning of the game it is not yet determined which player will play with the red balls and which with the yellow. The colours are assigned when the first ball is played into a hole.

To win the game, a player must have sunk either all five of his balls into any five holes (e.g. Picture 3), or three balls in a row (diagonally, vertically or horizontally) (Picture 4). The game is then over and the winner receives 1 point.

If a player manages to sink the last of his five balls in such a way that two rows are formed (Picture 5), he receives 3 points.

Before the game it is agreed what total of points must be reached in order to win.

YAGO POOL can be played in three different variants: EASY, MEDIUM and PROFESSIONAL.

Variant EASY

Player A and Player B agree between themselves who begins the first game. Each further game is begun by the winner of the previous game. Example: Player A begins.

Player A places the blue ball on the starting point and plays it towards the 10 placed balls, to move these towards the 9 holes. After this opening shot the blue ball is taken out of play, and the yellow and red balls are from then on played directly.

If Player A, for example, sinks a red ball in a hole, he may continue playing and from then on plays with the red balls in this game. Otherwise Player B is up and continues to play with the yellow balls.

If in one shot Player A sinks both a red and a yellow ball while the colours are not yet assigned, he may decide which colour he wants to play, and his opponent may continue the game. Both balls remain in the holes.

If a player sinks the opponent's ball, this ball always remains in the hole and the opponent continues the game.

After a foul (or several fouls in the same turn), the opponent is always up for two shots. If on the first shot after a foul he sinks a ball correctly, he may continue to play two shots. The same applies to subsequent shots in which balls are sunk correctly. If, however, he also commits a foul on the first shot, his second shot is forfeited and the opponent is up for two shots.

Fouls (EASY)

  • The blue ball jumps out of the playing field or falls into a hole on the opening shot. The blue ball is taken out of the game.

  • An opponent's ball is struck with the finger.

  • A red or yellow ball jumps out of the playing field. The opponent places the ball at any point in the YAGO POOL triangle. If the whole area is occupied by other balls, the ball is placed as close as possible to the YAGO POOL triangle.

  • A player accidentally moves a ball while playing (e.g. with the hand or clothing). The ball in question is put back in its previous place.

Sunk balls on fouls (EASY)

  • On a foul one or more balls fall into a hole while the colours have not yet been assigned. The ball is taken out of the hole and placed by the opponent at any point in the YAGO POOL triangle. If the whole area is occupied by other balls, the ball is placed as close as possible to the YAGO POOL triangle. The assignment of colours remains open.

  • On a foul one's own ball falls into a hole. The ball is taken out of the hole and placed by the opponent at any point in the YAGO POOL triangle. If the whole area is occupied by other balls, the ball is placed as close as possible to the YAGO POOL triangle.

  • On a foul a ball of the opponent falls into a hole. The opponent's ball remains in the hole.

Variant MEDIUM

Player A and Player B agree between themselves who begins the first game. Each further game is begun by the winner of the previous game. Example: Player A begins.

Player A places the blue ball on the starting point and plays it towards the 10 placed balls, to move these towards the 9 holes. After this opening shot the blue ball is taken out of play, and the yellow and red balls are from then on played directly.

In the MEDIUM variant the yellow and red balls may only be sunk into the holes indirectly, i.e. they must first have touched at least one cushion or another ball. If a player accidentally sinks one of his own balls directly, this ball is taken out of the hole and placed by the opponent on the YAGO POOL triangle.

Fouls (MEDIUM)

  • The blue ball jumps out of the playing field or falls into a hole on the opening shot. The blue ball is taken out of the game.

  • An opponent's ball is struck with the finger.

  • A red or yellow ball jumps out of the playing field. The opponent places the ball at any point in the YAGO POOL triangle. If the whole area is occupied by other balls, the ball is placed as close as possible to the YAGO POOL triangle.

  • A player accidentally moves a ball while playing (e.g. with the hand or clothing). The ball in question is put back in its previous place.

Sunk balls on fouls (MEDIUM)

Variant PROFESSIONAL

Player A and Player B agree between themselves who begins the first game. Each further game is begun by the loser of the previous game. Example: Player A begins.

Player A places the blue ball on the starting point and plays it towards the 10 placed balls, to move these towards the 9 holes. If he sinks, for example, a red ball in a hole, he plays from then on with the red balls in this game, and Player B with the yellow balls.

In contrast to the EASY and MEDIUM variants, the blue ball remains in play. Using the blue ball, Player A plays at the red balls on the playing field. If he sinks a red ball correctly in doing so, he may continue playing.

A player may, after a foul by the opponent, forgo his two shots and let the opponent continue playing, if this seems advantageous to him.

Fouls (PROFESSIONAL)

  • A player hits no ball with the blue ball, or first hits a ball of the opponent. Note: It does not matter whether the balls have not yet been sunk or have already been sunk.

  • A player plays the blue ball into a hole, or it jumps out of the playing field. The opponent places the blue ball on the starting point or to the side of it (left or right, at the same height as the starting point), whichever is most favourable for him in the given situation. The blue ball may always be played in every direction, including backwards.

Sunk balls on fouls (PROFESSIONAL)
