Game Components
- 1 game board
- 3 "little pig" tokens (each pig has its own colour)
- 1 "wolf" token
- 1 cauldron (large enough to hold 3 little pigs)
- 3 dice (in the same colours as the little pigs), each with sides "1", "2", "3", two "wolf" sides and one "house" side
- 1 "brick house", assembled from 4 parts
Goal of the Game
Working together, bring the three little pigs into the brick house (after first building it) before the wolf catches them.
Setup
The three "little pig" tokens and the "wolf" token are placed on their starting positions. The cauldron is placed on the spot reserved for it on the board. The base of the house is set up.
Gameplay
Play passes from player to player clockwise. The youngest player starts. They roll the die of the same colour as the little pig they want to move.
- If the die shows "1", "2" or "3", the player moves the little pig forward that many spaces (see "Moving the Little Pigs" below).
- If the die shows "wolf", the wolf moves forward (see "Moving the Wolf" below).
- If the die shows "house", the player may:
- either place a little pig of their choice into a house to hide there (if the wolf is near),
- or leave the little pig where it is (pass the turn),
- or stop on the "bricks" space in order to add an extra part to the house.
After the player has taken the action given by the die, play passes to the next player.
Moving the Wolf
The wolf always moves clockwise and only along the "wolf" spaces of the board: from one "wolf" space to the next "wolf" space. If one or more little pigs are in the wolf's path, they are placed in the cauldron. Then play passes to the next player.
Moving the Little Pigs
Once the little pigs have left their starting positions, they can never return to them for the rest of the game. Little pigs may move either left or right (the player's choice).
Note: the same little pig token may not be used twice in a row (a player cannot roll the same die as the previous player), except in the following cases:
- If the 2 other little pigs are in the cauldron.
- If the 2 other little pigs are in the brick house.
Houses
When a little pig is in one of the houses (its token is placed not on the space in front of the house, but directly on the house), the wolf cannot catch it.
A little pig can be placed in a house in two cases:
- If, moving the number of spaces shown on the die, the little pig lands directly in the house (which also counts as a space).
- If the die shows the "house" side.
When a little pig leaves a house, the space directly in front of the house also counts.
Note: only one little pig can be in the straw house at a time, two in the wooden house, and three in the brick house (and that is a victory! But this house must first be built).
To get into the brick house, it must first be built
To add a wall or a roof to the house, a little pig must move onto the "bricks" space located directly in front of the brick house. This is possible only if the little pig stops exactly on this space or if the die shows the "house" side.
How to Help a Little Pig Avoid Landing in the Cauldron
First of all, the little pig token, moving exactly the number of spaces indicated, must land on one of the two "cauldron exit" spaces. Then play passes to the next player.
The next player rolls the die of the same colour as the little pig in the cauldron.
- If the die shows "1", "2" or "3", the player takes the little pig (of the same colour as the die) out of the cauldron, moving it the indicated number of spaces. The little pig can leave the cauldron only through one of the "cauldron exit" spaces (the player chooses which, depending on the position of the wolf).
- If the die shows "house", the player takes the little pig out of the cauldron and places it in one of the houses of their choice (see "Houses").
- If the die shows "wolf", the little pig token cannot be taken out of the cauldron on this turn. It is the next player's turn.
(Reminder: the next player cannot roll the same die as the previous player - see "Moving the Little Pigs".)
Notes
- Only one little pig can be taken out of the cauldron per turn. But if there is another little pig in the cauldron, the next player has the right to roll its die in order to rescue it.
- A little pig that has reached the brick house can leave it in order to help another little pig get out of the wolf's cauldron.
Who Wins?
If all three little pigs, alive and well, have hidden from the wolf in the brick house, all the players are winners! If the wolf has thrown all three little pigs into ... (the source text ends here, mid-sentence)
