Components

  • 1 game board of 64 squares
  • 4 Lawyer pawns
  • 80 Article § pawns: 25 blue, 25 red, 15 yellow, 15 green

Setup

  • For 2 players: only the 2 Lawyers, the 2 starting squares and the 50 blue and red ARTICLE pawns are used.
  • For 4 players: each player receives 15 ARTICLE pawns.
  • The players each choose a colour and place their Lawyer on the matching starting square. They then agree on who will begin. The others follow in clockwise order.

Playing the Game

Moving the Lawyers

  • On his turn, a player may make a DETOUR with one of his Lawyer pawns. He moves it horizontally or vertically across a number of unoccupied squares, then turns at a right angle (90°) to continue moving one or more squares of his choice, before placing the pawn. The square on which the right-angle turn takes place is called the DETOUR SQUARE.

Figure 1: Movement of a lawyer: the DETOUR.

Placing an Article §

  • The player who makes a detour places an Article § pawn on the detour square. The number printed on that square will be counted in the player's points at the end of the game.

Taking an Article §

  • Instead of moving his Lawyer, a player may take an Article pawn on his turn. He jumps over an opposing Article pawn, as in checkers, provided there is a free square immediately after it. Successive jumps are allowed.

Figure 2 shows four steps: (1) the lawyer makes a detour; (2) an article is placed on the detour square; (3) this article jumps the opposing article; (4) the jumped article is removed from the board.

Captured Articles

  • Lawyers cannot take and cannot be taken. Articles that have been taken are kept by the player who took them and are added to his points at the end of the game.

End of the Game

  • The game ends as soon as a player can no longer move his Lawyer. The Lawyer is then blocked between 4 articles, or between articles and the edge of the game board.

Figure 3: The lawyer is blocked: he cannot move in any of the 4 possible directions.

Scoring

  • Each player then adds up the points he has gained:
    • the numbers of the squares occupied by his Article pawns,
    • the total of the Article pawns he has taken from the other players.
  • The player with the most points wins the game.

Note: the point values of the 64 squares are printed on the board itself, not in the rules text, which refers to "the numbers of the squares".
