Beginning the game

Two decks of cards are shuffled and placed facedown on the table: the Resource deck (small cards) and the Situation deck (large cards). Everyone draws a hand of five Resource cards from the deck. Players look at their cards but conceal them from the other players.

One player is chosen to be the Judge for the first round. (Players may choose the first Judge however they want; for example, craziest outdoor adventure experience.) The other players are Storytellers.

Starting each round

The Judge draws a card from the Situation deck and reads it aloud before placing it faceup in the middle. Each Storyteller silently imagines being in the Situation described by the Judge, and thinks of a way to resolve the situation using exactly three of their Resources.

Players may reread the Situation card. Everybody shows that they're ready to share their stories by laying down the three Resources they plan to use facedown on the table. (The Judge may set a one-minute time limit on this phase of the game.)

When everyone is ready, the Storyteller to the left of the Judge describes their plan to resolve the challenge in the Situation using only three Resources. Storytellers may describe how they came into possession of these Resources or may simply assume that they happen to have these Resources on hand. While telling their story, Storytellers place each Resource faceup in front of them, revealing each as it appears in the story. (The Judge may choose to set a 90-second time limit for storytelling.)

When this Storyteller has finished, the other Storytellers take turns doing the same. Turns proceed clockwise around the circle until all Storytellers have shared their stories.

When everyone has finished, the Judge shares (constructive) opinions about the stories and chooses a winner for the round. Judging is completely subjective, and may take into account any or all of the following:

  • How well the proposed plan of action resolved the situation.
  • How creatively the three Resources were used, individually or in combination.
  • How funny the story was.
  • How well the story was presented.
  • The chances that the proposed plan of action will actually work!

The winner keeps the Situation card.

Storytellers discard the three cards they used faceup in a discard pile to the side of the Resources deck and draw three new Resources to add to their hands. A new round begins, and the player to the Judge's left becomes the Judge.

Winning

The winner of the game is the player who first collects three Situation cards OR has the most Situation cards after everyone has had two turns as the Judge. But the fun doesn't have to stop there - you can play for as long as you want!

Optional rules

Trade-in: After each round is judged and Storytellers have taken three new Resource cards, each Storyteller may discard one, two or three cards, placing them on the bottom of the Resource deck and replacing them with new Resource cards drawn from the top of the deck.

Judge's Choice: At the beginning of each round, the Judge takes the top three Situation cards from the deck, chooses their favorite to use for that round, and puts the other two on the bottom of the Situation deck.

Additional variations

Create your own cards: Before playing, write new Resources and Situations on the blank cards provided and shuffle them into the deck.

Pass the card (challenging): At the beginning of each round, after each player has five cards, but before a Situation card is chosen, each player chooses one card from their own hand and passes it to the player to their left. Each player must use the new card as one of the three Resource cards in their story.

Improvised situations (challenging): Instead of choosing a Situation from the deck, the Judge makes up a situation on the spot for players to resolve.

On-the-fly storytelling (very challenging): At the beginning of a round, each player draws three Resource cards without looking at them and places them face down in front of them. The Judge reads the Situation card aloud. On each Storyteller's turn, she or he begins telling an improvised story. They then turn over the Resource cards one by one at whatever points in the story they choose. As they reveal a card, they must immediately incorporate it into their story.

Have fun!
