- 30 double-sided bird cards;
- 4 bird figurines;
- The rules, which you are holding in your hands.
Setup
Shuffle all the bird cards and lay them out on the table so that the cards do not overlap each other. If this is your first game, we recommend laying the bird cards out as a rectangle of 6 by 5 cards.
Leave space in front of you for your personal collection of bird cards.
The first player is the youngest participant. Or you can use any other rule for determining the first player (he has no strategic advantage at all).
Gameplay
Bird Cards
On each side of any bird card there are from one to three birds of red, yellow, green or purple colour.
On the two sides of each card there is either the same number of birds of different colours, or a different number of birds of the same colour.
Example: On one side of a card there are two red birds. This means that on the other side there will be either two green birds, two yellow birds or two purple birds, or one red bird or three red birds.
Player's Turn
Players take turns. The first player makes the very first turn, after which the right to move passes from one participant to another clockwise, and so on until the end of the game.
On his turn a player must flip over one bird card. If this card (its flipped side) is suitable for his collection, he must take it and add it to his collection. If this card (its flipped side) is not suitable for his collection, he puts it back on the table face up.
We advise using the following rule in your first game: if the card is not suitable for the player's collection, he must return it to the same place where it lay before it was flipped. In subsequent games following this rule is not mandatory. The player may decide for himself where to place a flipped card that is not suitable for his collection.
What Are the Bird Figurines For?
Each player may, once per game, on his turn, reserve one of the cards lying on the table by placing his bird figurine on it. This action does not end his turn. The other players cannot take this card. The bird stands either until the end of the game, or until the moment when the bird's owner takes this card for himself. After this the bird goes back into the box. Only one bird can be on a card. The figurine cannot be taken back into hand.
Adding Bird Cards to the Collection
The player's goal is to collect bird cards. His collection consists of no more than four rows of cards: one for each colour of bird. In each row, birds are added in order: first a card with one bird is placed, then one with two, and then one with three.
Example of a row with yellow bird cards in a player's collection: a card with one yellow bird, a card with two yellow birds, a card with three yellow birds.
ATTENTION! Do not forget that the player first flips the card over, and only then looks at whether it is suitable for his collection. A player cannot start collecting a row of bird cards of the same colour that he already has. Bird cards never leave a player's collection.
Examples
- Vanya has no cards in his collection. On his turn he flips a card with one red bird, and on its reverse side there turns out to be one purple bird. He adds this card to his collection.
- Lena has no cards in her collection. On her turn she flips a card with three yellow birds, and on its reverse side there turn out to be two yellow birds. Lena cannot add this card to her collection, because each row of the collection must begin with a card with one bird.
- Zhenya has one card with a yellow bird in her collection. She flips a card with two red birds and discovers on its reverse side two yellow birds. She adds this card to her collection.
- In Petya's collection, in the first row, there is a card with one purple bird, and in the second row, cards with one and two green birds. He flips a card with three yellow birds and discovers on its reverse side three purple birds. Unfortunately, he cannot add this card to his collection.
- In Anya's collection there is a card with one green bird and cards with one, two and three red birds. She flips a card with one yellow bird, and on its reverse side there turns out to be one red bird. She cannot add this card to her collection. (The Russian text names Lena here, apparently in error.)
End of the Game and Determining the Winner
The game ends if:
- One of the players has completely finished two, three or four rows of bird cards in a game with four, three or two participants respectively. This player becomes the winner.
- Only the last 3 birds remain on the table OR during the last eight turns none of the players has added a single bird card to his collection. In this case the player who collected the most birds in his collection wins. In case of a tie, the winner is the player with the fewest cards in his collection. If it is still a tie, then the game has several winners.
