90 cards:

  • 10 Suspects
  • 32 Animal cards
  • 39 Food cards
  • 9 Joker cards (cat with food sack)

Goal of the Game

The goal is to cleverly redeem food cards to collect various animal cards and use them to eliminate suspects. The thief is exposed as soon as only one suspect remains. See who managed to get the most valuable gold coins.

Preparation

Sort the 90 cards into three groups: Suspects, Animals, Food and Joker cards.

Lay the ten suspects face up on the table, with the lower-value cards at the bottom and the higher-value cards at the top.

Next, sort the animal cards into owls, goats, donkeys, and snakes. Each card shows a number indicating how hungry an animal is at the moment. Shuffle the four piles and place them face up next to the suspects. Only the topmost animal in each pile is visible.

Tip: Take a look at the picture on the bottom of the game box. It shows how the suspect and animal cards are laid out.

Finally, shuffle the food and joker cards face down. Each player takes three cards into hand. Place the remaining cards face down in a pile in the middle of the table.

Now It Begins!

The youngest player goes first, then play continues clockwise. On your turn, you perform one of the following three actions:

A) Draw two food cards from the deck and place them in your hand.

B) Feed an animal on top of the deck. To do so, discard the amount of food indicated for the desired animal, i.e., either only carrots, only apples, or only bread.

When feeding, you may not combine food types, but you may play any number of jokers, which count as one piece of food each.

For example: (the translated rules show an example here as a picture; it is not reproduced in this text)

Then take the animal card into your hand. You may not feed more than one animal during your turn. Place the food cards used for this purpose face up next to the face-down food pile. If it runs out during the game, reshuffle the discarded food cards.

C) Eliminate a suspect by using the animal cards depicted next to them. The animals saw this person at the time of the crime – therefore, they couldn't have stolen the magic ring!

Place the innocent person face up in front of you. You may only eliminate one suspect on your turn. The animal cards you used are removed from the game.

After you have performed one of the three actions, it is your left-hand neighbor's turn.

End of the Game

The game ends when only one suspect remains. He is the thief, and you have solved the case!

Note: Of course, you can only feed animals that are still available. It's very rare that you've fed all the animals and there are still at least two suspects left. In this case, you haven't recognized the thief and unfortunately, everyone has lost!

Scoring

Once the thief has been identified, add up the values on each player's gold coins (each suspect card shows the number of coins you get when you clear them). The player with the highest total has contributed the most to the thief hunt and wins!

In the event of a tie, the player with the most cards in their hand wins.
