The Game
The 48 suspects match a description with the following features:
| Gender / age | Clothing colour | Weapon |
|---|---|---|
| Old man | Green | Poison |
| Old woman | Brown | Dagger |
| Young woman | Blue | Pistol |
| Young man | Yellow |
One player shuffles the cards and takes the top card of the stack. This is the culprit. The other players must not see which card it is. The same player then turns over the next card and places it face up on the table, comparing it with the culprit.
- If one or more of the features match those of the culprit, the player says "Suspect".
- If none of the features match those of the culprit, the player says "Innocent".
The player then turns over the next card and does the same. He keeps turning cards and calling "Suspect" or "Innocent". The other players combine the information gained until they believe they know the culprit. A player who gives a wrong solution may no longer take part in guessing.
Whoever unmasks the culprit first scores one point.
The next player then shuffles the cards and turns over the culprit card. The game continues until every player has turned over the culprit card once. The player with the most points wins.
If players are tied for the most points, a decider round is held between them.
Example
Suppose three cards have already been turned over:
- Card 1: blue = innocent
- Card 2: green = innocent
- Card 3: blue = suspect
From cards 1 and 2 it follows that poison is the weapon. Card 3 shows that the culprit must in this case be a young man, since this is the only feature that can make him a suspect. What remains is the choice between brown and yellow clothing.
If the next card is this one, it gives you little information:
- Card 4: brown, suspect
But if the next card is this one, you know that the culprit is a young man with poison in a brown suit:
- Card 5: brown, suspect
