If I write my number in a space with a water tank or other symbol, can I still use my own action?
The designer answered this directly on BGG. It matches the rulebook.

Yes. The symbol on the space only matters for the matching action. Writing a number in a water-tank space with a Robot combination, for instance, still lets you do the Robot action; you just can't take the Water action for that tank.
