Components
53 Cards made up of:
- 1 Health Card
- 1 Willpower Card
- 1 Character Card
- 9 Dust Cards
- 4 Location Cards
- 36 Event Cards
- 1 Wagon Card
Setup
Place the Health Card and the Willpower Card off to the right side set to:
- 6 each (Easy mode)
- 5 each (Standard mode)
- 4 each (Hard mode)
Place the four Location Cards in a row, in the following order: Blacksmith/Homestead, Saloon/Warehouse, Church/Belltower, Assayer/Mine.
Take one Dust card and place it above your Willpower card. Place the remaining Dust cards off to the side. This is the Dust Reserve.
About Dust
Dust is the reason the town of Reckoning exists. Once the miners discovered the powers imbued in the dust, a new mining rush began. This caused the initial boom in the town, and sadly the terrifying events that followed.
You will track your available dust by placing it above the Health/Willpower cards. And you will track your consumed dust in the corruption pile, located below the Health/Willpower cards. Be careful, as your amount of Corruption cards cannot exceed your Willpower. Otherwise you will be lost to corruption and lose the game.
Event Deck
Place the Wagon card off to the side.
Shuffle all of the event cards. Deal out 15 cards into a pile face down. Shuffle the wagon into the pile face down. Place the remaining event cards on top of that pile, face down. This is your event deck.
Draw 3 cards from the event deck to your hand. You are now ready to begin.
Gameplay
Each round of the game has two phases, Events and Losses.
Events
Deal 5 cards from the event deck face up into a row to the right of the deck. This is the event row.
Place the Character card below the leftmost card in the event row.
In order from left to right you will resolve each card one by one. To resolve a card you will start with the topmost effect and work your way through all effects on the card. After you resolve all effects, place the card face up in the discard pile. Then move your character card to the next card in line and repeat until all cards have been resolved.
Before resolving any event card you may do the following:
Consume dust (may be used more than once per Event card):
- Remove a Tentacle from a Location
- Remove a Tentacle or Rider from the Event Row (and reap no effect from the card at all)
- Draw a card
Discard any card from hand to do one of these (may be used once per round):
- Visit a Location/Resolve its effect (that does not have tentacles or fire)
- Put out a fire at a Location.
If a tentacle is at a building, you may not use the building's ability.
If a location (two buildings) is on fire, you cannot use the ability of either building.
Use your character ability: Skip one effect of any event card.
Losses
Once you've completed all of the events, check to see if you have any losses:
- Lose 1 Health if one or more Location cards are on fire.
- If you have more than 5 cards, discard down to 5.
Repeat taking turns until the game is won or lost.
Special Cards
Wagon: When the wagon card is first revealed in the event row or drawn into your hand, place it at the Warehouse. Immediately discard all remaining cards in the event row, end the round and shuffle the discard pile into the final deck (once this deck is depleted, the game ends). Afterwards, begin a new round.
Winning the Game
To win the game you must escape Reckoning on the wagon. To do so, you'll need to have 4 cards with the same number (4 of a kind), but the wagon must be at the warehouse and it's safe to board (no tentacles or fire at the warehouse). You must discard a card from hand to visit the Warehouse.
To reiterate, you must meet all of these conditions to win:
- 4 of a kind in hand
- Wagon is at the warehouse
- No tentacles or fire at the warehouse
- Visit the Warehouse (discard a card from hand or Event card effect)
Losing the Game
There are three ways you can lose the game:
- Death: If all of your health is depleted, your character has died.
- Corruption: If your corruption ever exceeds your willpower, the dust has consumed you.
- Run out of time: If you run out of cards in the deck, your opportunity to escape has disappeared.
