Game Description
Each player has 12 ships:
- Battleship (броненосец) – one
- Cruisers (крейсер) – two
- Gunboats (канонерка) – three
- Torpedo boats (миноносец) – four
- Minesweeper (тральщик) – one
- Submarine (подлодка) – one
The strongest ship is the battleship; each player has one. Cruisers are weaker, and each player must have two. Gunboats are weaker still, three per player. The smaller ships are the torpedo boats, four per player. Next in order is the minesweeper, one per player. Lowest of all is the submarine, one per player. When attacking, the submarine ranks weaker than all the others, but it outranks the battleship and the cruisers. Each player also has 3 mines in reserve, to be placed by the minesweeper.
Each ship is set up on its own side of the board as follows. The square marked with the number 1 in a circle receives the battleship. The cruisers (number 2) go on either side of it. The three gunboats (number 3) go in front of them. The torpedo boats (number 4) go on the flanks. The minesweeper (number 5) and the submarine (number 6) go on the outermost edges.
The goal of the game is to destroy the entire enemy fleet.
Rules
- All ships move at the same speed in any direction, but always bow first. Moving stern first or sideways is not allowed. Note: a ship may not cross land (islands and peninsulas).
- A move is the transfer of a piece from one intersection (circle) to the next. Turning the bow right or left counts as one move; turning completely around counts as two moves.
- A senior ship strikes a junior ship on the broadside (в борт) or the bow (в нос). It takes the place of the destroyed ship, which is considered sunk and is removed from the game.
- Ships of equal rank and strength can strike each other only on the broadside.
- Junior ships can strike senior ships, likewise only on the broadside.
- No ship may strike another in the stern.
- Striking an enemy ship is not compulsory.
- Only one of your own ships may be moved in a single turn.
- If an enemy ship (other than a submarine) lands on a square marked "explosion" (that is, under fire from coastal guns), roll the die. If "explosion" comes up, the ship is removed from the game, sunk by coastal artillery. If the ship survives the roll and remains on that square, the die is not rolled again. It is rolled only when the ship enters that square.
- The minesweeper may lay mines and lift mines on its current position. Lifting or laying a mine does not count as a move. Mines that are lifted go into the player's possession (both the player's own and the opponent's mines). If a ship other than the minesweeper or the submarine lands on a square with a mine, roll the die. If "explosion" comes up, the ship is considered to have struck a mine and is removed from the game. The mine remains in place. If a mine lies on a square under the enemy's coastal artillery fire (the "explosion" marking on the map), the die must be rolled twice: once for the mine and once for the coastal artillery. If a ship survives the roll on a mined square and stays there without moving, the die is not rolled again. It is rolled only when the ship enters the mined square.
- The submarine passes freely, without a die roll, over squares marked with mines or with coastal artillery (under water). It counts as senior to the battleship and the cruisers, but junior to all other ships.
