Goal of the Game
Be the first to get rid of all your cards. Points are awarded for the cards left in your opponents' hands. The game lasts several rounds. The first to reach 500 points wins.
Preparation
- Each player takes a card; the player with the highest value becomes the dealer (count any card with a symbol as zero).
- The dealer shuffles the deck and deals 7 cards to each player.
- Place the rest of the deck face down to form a draw pile.
- The top card of the draw pile is turned over to start the discard pile.
Gameplay
The person to the left of the dealer starts the game. On your turn you must play a card that matches the top card of the discard pile by color or by number.
Example: If the card on the discard pile is a blue 7, the player must play a blue card OR a 7 of any color. Alternatively, the player may play a wild card.
If you do not have a card that matches the one on the discard pile, you must draw a card from the pile. If the card you drew can be played, you may play it the same turn. Otherwise play passes to the next player in turn.
You may also choose NOT to play a card from your hand. In that case you must draw a card from the deck. If it can be played, you may play it the same turn, but you may not play another card from your hand after drawing a card from the deck.
Action Cards
Draw Two: When you play this card, the next player must draw 2 cards and lose their turn. This card can only be played on the same color or on another Draw Two card. If it appears at the start of the game, the same rule applies.
Reverse: When you play this card, the direction of play is reversed (if play is currently going left, it changes to right, and vice versa). This card can only be played on the same color or on another Reverse card. If this card is revealed at the start of the game, the dealer goes first, then play moves right rather than left.
Skip: When you play this card, the next player is "skipped" (loses their turn). This card can only be played on the same color or on another Skip card. If a Skip card is revealed at the start of the game, the player to the left of the dealer is "skipped", so the player to the left of that player starts the game.
Wild: When you play this wild card, you may choose the color with which play will continue (any color, including the color that was in play before the wild card was played). You may play a wild on your turn even if you have another playable card in hand. If a wild card is revealed at the start of the game, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color that continues play.
Wild Draw 4: When you play this card, you may choose the color to continue play PLUS the next player must draw 4 cards from the deck and lose their turn. But there is a catch! You may only play this card if you have NO other card in your hand matching the COLOR of the discard pile (but you may play it if you have a matching number or action cards). If the card appears at the start of the game, return this card to the deck and draw another card.
Note: If you suspect that a Draw 4 card was played against you illegally (i.e. the player has a matching card), you may challenge that player. The challenged player must show you (the challenger) their hand. If the player is guilty (has cards of that color in hand), they must draw 4 cards instead of you. However, if the challenged player is innocent, you must draw 4 cards PLUS 2 more cards (6 in total)!
Creeper card (also counts as a Wild card): When you draw this card from the deck, you must immediately show it to all other players. Then you must draw 3 additional cards from the deck and put them in your hand. If one of these three additional cards is also a Creeper card, do not show it to the other players, just keep it in your hand and use it as a regular wild card. The Creeper card is also a wild card, so you choose the color that resumes play. If this card is revealed at the start of the game, the person to the left of the dealer chooses the color with which play starts.
Ending a Round
When you play your second-to-last card, you must shout "UNO" (meaning "one") to indicate that you have only one card left. If you do not shout "UNO" and are caught before the next player starts their turn, you must draw two cards.
When a player has no cards left, the round ends. Scoring is done and the game starts again.
If the last card played in a round is a Draw Two or a Wild Draw 4 card, the next player must draw 2 or 4 cards respectively. These cards count toward scoring.
If the draw pile runs out and no player has run out of cards, the discard pile is reshuffled and the game continues.
Scoring
The player who is first to get rid of their cards in a round receives points for all the cards remaining in their opponents' hands, as follows:
- All number cards (0-9): face value (as many as is written on the card)
- Draw Two: 20 points
- Reverse: 20 points
- Skip: 20 points
- Wild: 50 points
- Wild Draw 4: 50 points
- Creeper: 50 points
After scoring a round, if no player has reached 500 points, shuffle the cards and start a new round.
End of the Game
The player who first reaches 500 points wins.
