Game Material

  • Tutorial (10 cards). Difficulty rating shown on the box.
  • Adventure (60 cards). Difficulty rating shown on the box.
  • The tutorial card set lies on top of the adventure card set.
  • Solution booklet.

IMPORTANT: Do not look at the cards of the adventure until you are playing it!

SOLUTION BOOKLET: Only read the solution when you really cannot get any further. (The booklet's cover reads: "Only read this booklet if you are stuck in the adventure and the hints or solutions in the app do not help you any further, or if you have already completed the adventure." — "IMPORTANT: Only read if you are stuck.")

Goal of the Game

Each card set represents a cooperative adventure. You have exactly 1 hour to complete your mission in a galaxy far, far away. In this time you must master a variety of tasks and challenges.

Game Setup

To get to know the game, we recommend playing the tutorial first. It explains the basic rules of UNLOCK! in a playful way. You may play the tutorial before you have read these rules completely.

Once you have decided on an adventure (or the tutorial), take the corresponding card set and carry out these steps:

  • Lay the start card face up on the table so that the side with the text is visible.
  • Lay the other cards ready as a deck, with the backs (with the numbers) facing up.
  • Start the app (see page 12), choose the adventure (or the tutorial) and place the device within easy reach and clearly visible for everyone on the table.
  • One of you reads the text of the start card aloud, starts the countdown in the app and turns the card over. Your adventure begins!

Note: You may take notes at any time.

IMPORTANT: Every card has a unique sorting number on its back. Use it before each adventure to check that the card set is complete.

Adventure start card (Flucht von Hoth)

ADVANTAGE CARDS: Choose three of the six advantage cards without reading them. Put the remaining advantage cards back into the box. Now reveal the three chosen advantage cards and read them aloud. They may contain hints, clues, shortcuts or other advantages.

Now start the app, choose the scenario "Flucht von Hoth" and press START. Then turn this card over and begin your mission.

Tutorial start card

Start the app STAR WARS UNLOCK!, choose the tutorial and press Start. You now have 10 minutes to escape. If you get stuck, you can request hints in the app by entering a card number. Now turn this card over.

"Welcome to STAR WARS UNLOCK! The cooperative escape game. With this game you can experience the live escape room experience at your home table. You will solve puzzles, decode codes, combine objects with one another and discover many secrets. In this first adventure you are spies of the Empire who have been captured by the Rebels. You are being held in a primitive cell of a secret Rebel base."

Rules of Play

The front of the start card shows the first location of the adventure. Various numbers and letters are distributed around this place. For every letter and every number there is a corresponding card in the deck, marked accordingly on its back. The basic principle is: whenever, in the course of an adventure, you see a number or a letter on the card of a location or on any other card, find the corresponding card in the deck, reveal it and lay it face up on the table.

The game is played in real time. (You use the cards and the app at the same time.) You are a team and must work together to complete the adventure before time runs out. Any of you may search for found cards in the deck. You can divide this up among yourselves as you like. Only one thing is not allowed: you may divide the deck into smaller piles, but you may not spread all the cards out individually on the table.

Tutorial: the cell

Example card text: "This is the cell in which you are being held. You see various things. Now find the five cards in the deck whose numbers you can see here and reveal them." (Inhaftierungszelle; cards 35, 69, 21, 11, 42.)

Card Types

There are different types of cards.

Objects (red or blue symbol)

Objects are usually items that you can combine with other objects (see Combining Objects – page 6).

Examples: Object 35 is a locked chest. Object 11 is a code cylinder.

Tutorial card text, code cylinder (11): "A code cylinder. You can combine this object with a red number. To do so, you must add both numbers. If the sum is the number of a card in the deck, you may reveal that card. You can request a hint for this card by entering its number in the app (11)."

Tutorial card text, locked chest (35): "A locked chest. You can combine this object with a blue number. To do so, you must add both numbers. If the sum is the number of a card in the deck, you may reveal that card."

Tutorial card text, data screen (42): "A data screen. Unfortunately without power. You can combine this object with a blue number. To do so, you must add both numbers. If the sum is the number of a card in the deck, you may reveal that card."

Machines (green symbol)

You must enter the number of the machine in the app to use it (see Using Machines – page 9). Machine 69 is a console with 6 metal pins.

Tutorial card text (69): "A small electrical console with metal pins. To operate it, press the Machine button in the app and enter the number of this card (69). IMPORTANT: Look around the room for clues as to how the machine works."

Codes (yellow symbol)

These cards require a code to be entered in the app so that the adventure can continue (see Entering Codes – page 10). Card 21 is a door with a code. You must enter the correct code in the app to open it.

Tutorial card text (21): "This is the exit. It is secured with a code. To escape and thus finish the tutorial, you must enter a four-digit code in the app. Look around the room."

Other Cards

These cards include:

  • Locations, such as a room with the objects in it,
  • Results of interactions with objects,
  • Penalties you receive when you make mistakes,
  • Modifications (see page 8).

(The illustration shows, left: a room; middle: the result of an interaction; right: a penalty.)

Tutorial card texts: "Well done. The screen is running again. This should help you to escape. Discard cards 25 and 42. Thanks to these 4 digits you can now enter a code in the app!" (48, 42, 25) and, on the penalty card (51): "PRESS THE PENALTY BUTTON ONCE. Discard this card. You have a really bad feeling about this."

Combining Objects

Sometimes it is possible to combine objects with each other. To do this, you add the numbers of the two cards that are in a red and a blue circle respectively. The sum is the number of the card that you must look for in the deck. (It is of course not possible to add a letter to a number.)

GOLDEN RULE: Only one red number can ever be combined with one blue number. Other combinations (blue + blue, red + red, blue + grey, etc.) are NEVER possible.

Example: You decide to combine the code cylinder (11) with the locked chest (35). So you look for card 46 (11+35) in the deck and reveal it. It works: you open the chest and discover another object inside.

Discarding Cards

At the top edge of some cards you will find crossed-out numbers or letters. These tell you to discard the corresponding cards, because you will no longer need them.

Example: after opening the chest (46), you discard the code cylinder (11) and the locked chest (35).

Penalties

Some actions do not get you anywhere and are a waste of time. When you draw a penalty card, follow the instructions on the card.

(Penalty card texts in the tutorial: "Press the penalty button once. Discard this card. You have a really bad feeling about this." — cards 39 and 51.)

Modifications

On some cards you will find so-called modifications. These are always red or blue numbers with a preceding "+". These numbers never refer to other cards in the deck. You must always combine them with the other colour. (Remember the Golden Rule!)

Example: You have restored the power (card 25) and thereby received a modification (+6). You can add it to a red number – but not to the card number (25).

Tutorial card text: "Very good! You have restored the power by connecting the wire to the machine. Discard cards 16, 46 and 69. +6 is a blue modification that you can add to a red number. If the sum is the number of a card in the deck, you may reveal that card." (25)

Using Machines

To use a machine (cards with a green symbol), you must enter its card number in the app. For a card with a letter, the number is printed under the letter. The app then displays the machine, which you can then use step by step. If you use it correctly and find the solution, the app tells you how to proceed.

Example (tutorial): Later in the adventure you find out how machine 69 is to be used: you must connect the two middle pins with the wire cable. To do so, press the Machine button in the app and enter card number 69. Then select the two pins and confirm your selection. For this correct solution you receive +9 in the app. This red modification can now be combined with the wire (16), which leads you to card 25 (16+9).

Tutorial card text (16): "A wire cable with rings at both ends. You can combine this object with a red number. To do so, you must add both numbers. If the sum is the number of a card in the deck, you may reveal that card."

IMPORTANT: You can lose time if you operate a machine incorrectly. Usually you must first work out how it functions.

Hidden Objects

You will not always discover all objects at first glance. So you must look at the cards very carefully, because sometimes you can find hidden numbers or letters. These refer to cards that you search out of the deck and reveal as usual.

Note: If you are stuck at some point, you can press the "Hidden Object" button in the app, which gives you a hint about the next hidden object. In addition, you can activate the automatic help function for hidden objects at the beginning of an adventure. The app then helps you automatically at the right time.

Example: Do you see the hidden number (16) inside the chest?

Tutorial card text: "Great. You have opened the chest. Discard cards 11 and 35. Look closely at the picture. There are TWO interesting things. If you see a number, reveal the corresponding card. If you are stuck, you can press the "Hidden Object" button in the app." (46; cards 35, 11)

Entering Codes

Sometimes in an adventure you will come across things that require a code (cards with a yellow symbol): for example number locks or input fields. To get further with such cards, you must first press the Code button in the app (see The App – page 12). Then you enter the code; you do not need to enter the card number. A code always consists of 4 digits.

If the entered code is correct, the app will tell you how to continue. If you enter a wrong code, it is quite possible that a few minutes will be deducted from your time.

Hints

If you are stuck, you can request hints. To do so, press the Hint button in the app and enter the card number you are stuck on.

If there are hints for a card with a letter, their card number is printed small under the letter.

Note: For some cards you can request a further hint in the app (which is sometimes the solution), in case the first hint does not give you enough information. Also do not forget the enclosed solution booklet.

End of the Game

The adventure ends when you solve the last puzzle and the timer stops. You can then look at your rating and see how well you did. The rating ranges from 0 to 5 green lights.
