Welcome and Before You Begin
This demo contains everything you need to discover Unlock! Kids.
Caution when cutting out the cards: cut them out without reading or even looking at the front. The back of each card shows large numbers or letters.
The card file is designed to be printed double-sided. If your printer cannot do this, print the fronts and backs separately, then assemble them with card sleeves (61 mm x 112 mm) or glue them together. Before assembling, make sure the number or letter at the top left of the front matches the number or letter at the centre of the back. Look only at the top of the fronts so you do not spoil the fun.
Read the introduction card, then place all the other cards face down.
The demo adventures are shorter than the adventures sold in shops. They let you discover the game without spoiling the full adventures.
Setup
Read the introduction card (1/28, the Cocow Island welcome card). Its text reads:
"Lay out all the game content (cards and cardboard objects) face down on the table. Your objective: reach the cabin of your favourite cow, Cocow! As soon as you see a number (even a hidden one, so keep your eyes open!), you can turn over the matching element. Here, reveal the cardboard object 5 and card 4. Now turn over this card."
Then place all the other cards face down, as described above.
Card 1 (Star Reward) and the Map Card
Card 1 text: "Bravo! You have just earned a star. This card will not help you in the adventure, but it will allow you to establish your score at the end of the game. Stars can be found hidden in many places, so keep your eyes open!"
The Cocow Island map card shows the island, with a token marked 5 and the number 17 on the map, and a list of eight symbols each paired with a number. The printed text is limited to the numbers, so the list is transcribed as pictures and numbers. Icons are pictures and are shown by their position:
| Position | Symbol | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Column 1, row 1 | [icon] | 20 |
| Column 1, row 2 | [icon] | 2 |
| Column 1, row 3 | [icon] | 18 |
| Column 1, row 4 | [icon] | 26 |
| Column 2, row 1 | [icon] | 13 |
| Column 2, row 2 | [icon] | 27 |
| Column 2, row 3 | [icon] | 25 |
| Column 2, row 4 | [icon] | 22-23 |
Symbol Table
Note: "Here is the symbol table. Warning! Do not turn over the elements matching these numbers straight away. Two half-symbols can make a complete symbol. As soon as you logically reconstruct one of the symbols shown, reveal the element matching the number indicated."
The symbol table lists seven symbols, each paired with a number. Icons are pictures and are shown by their position:
| Position | Symbol | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Column 1, row 1 | [icon] | 18 |
| Column 1, row 2 | [icon] | 20 |
| Column 1, row 3 | [icon] | 21 |
| Column 1, row 4 | [icon] | 25 |
| Column 2, row 1 | [icon] | 15 |
| Column 2, row 2 | [icon] | 26 |
| Column 2, row 3 | [icon] | 24 |
Star Cards
Cards 3, 7 and 11 carry the same star text as card 1:
"Bravo! You have just earned a star. This card will not help you in the adventure, but it will allow you to establish your score at the end of the game. Stars can be found hidden in many places, so keep your eyes open!"
Star cards are the cards that award stars. Stars do not help in the adventure itself; they are counted at the end of the game to establish your score.
Choice Card (Card 4)
Card 4 carries a choice icon and a hand icon, with the number 10 on the card. Its text reads:
"The [choice icon] indicates that a choice is offered to you. Use the element [hand icon] and place it under the path you think is most sensible to take!"
Cabin Cards (Cards 2 and 12)
Reaching Cocow's cabin is the end of an adventure. Card 2 is the first cabin card and card 12 is the second.
Card 2 text: "Bravo! You have reached Cocow's cabin! How many stars did you find in addition to the one on this card? You could have collected 5! [five star icons] And now, head over to Unlock! Kids to experience the full adventures!"
Card 12 text: "Bravo! You have reached Cocow's cabin! How many stars did you find in addition to the one on this card? You could have collected 4! [four star icons] In Unlock! Kids, each story contains two adventures to play! Put back all the elements (cards and objects) revealed so far face down on the table. Then turn over card B to explore a new path! [card B icon]"
Half-Symbol Card (Card 16)
Card 16 text: "Here is a half-symbol. It indicates that you can do something at this specific place by combining it with another half-symbol!"
Error Cards and Penalty Card
Error card text: "Here is an Error card. If you have revealed this card, it means you did not make the right decision."
Error cards appear as cards 18, 20, 25 and 27. Each carries the same text.
Penalty card (Card 26) text: "Here is a Penalty card. If you have revealed this type of Error card, it means you did not make the right decision. It will cost you the loss of one star at the end of your mission."
Other Cards
Other card fronts show pictures and numbers only, with no instruction text. Their content is shown by picture and is worked out through play.

The demo contains 25 cards and 4 cardboard objects (tokens), numbered 5, 10, 14 and 19 on their faces.

It is titled "Affaires résolues et nombre d'étoiles trouvées par aventure" (Cases solved and number of stars found per adventure). It ends with the line "À bientôt pour de futures enquêtes !" (See you soon for future investigations!).
