Goal of the Game
- Each deck of cards proposes a cooperative scenario.
- You are plunged into an adventure and have a limited amount of time to complete your mission.
- You will have to overcome many challenges.
Setup
To familiarize yourself with the game, it is recommended you start with the Tutorial, which explains the rules to you.
You can play this Tutorial before reading the rules of the game. Simply follow the setup instructions below.
- The starting card, with the title of the adventure, is placed at the center of the table, text visible.
- The other cards form a facedown draw pile.
- The app (see App — page 6) is launched (Tutorial adventure) and the device is placed within reach of the players.
- One player reads the scenario's introduction on the starting card aloud, then starts the countdown on the app and flips this card over. The game begins.
Note: you can equip yourself with paper and pencils to take notes.
ATTENTION: before starting an adventure, take care to check that your deck is complete by referring to the numbers on the lower right of the back of your cards.
Game Rules
The back of the starting card shows the first room of the game. In this room, numbers and letters appear that correspond to cards in the deck (numbers and letters printed on the backs of the cards). Every time you spot a number or a letter on the room card (or on another card), you must go find the matching card in the deck and reveal it. Revealed cards are placed face up in the center of the table, so that everyone can see them.
The game takes place in real time and simultaneously. You form a team and must cooperate to win. The organization of the group is up to you. You can decide that a single player searches through the deck of cards, or split it between several players.
It is forbidden to spread out the cards of the draw pile in front of you.
Card Types
THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF CARDS:
Objects (red or blue symbol)
Objects can sometimes interact with other objects (see Combining Objects — page 4).
Object 35 is a locked chest.
Object 11 is a key.
Machines (green symbol)
Using machines requires manipulations that you can perform in the app (see Machines — page 5).
Machine 69 is a grid with six pins.
The Other Cards
These cards can be:
- A place that presents a room and the objects it contains.
- The result of an interaction with an object.
- A penalty that you suffer when you make a mistake.
- A modifier (see Modifiers — page 5).
On the right, a room. In the center, the result of an interaction. On the left, a penalty.
Combining Objects
It is sometimes possible to combine objects (for example, a key with a door). To do so, simply add together their respective values (printed in a red or blue circle) and look for the matching card in the deck. Of course, it is not possible to combine a letter with a number.
GOLDEN RULE: you can only combine a red number with a blue number. NO other combination is possible (blue+blue, red+red, blue+gray, etc.).
You decide to use the key (11) on the locked chest (35). So you look for card 46 (11+35) in the deck and reveal it. It works: you open the chest and discover what's inside.
Discarding Cards
At the top of some cards, you will sometimes find crossed-out numbers and letters. You must immediately discard the corresponding cards, as they will not be used again for the rest of the game.
After opening the chest (46), you must discard the key (11) and the locked chest (35).
Penalties
Certain actions in the game may cause you to lose time. If you reveal a Penalty card, you must follow the instructions given (you will generally lose a few minutes). These cards are then systematically discarded.
Modifiers
On certain cards, you will find modifiers. These are red or blue numbers preceded by a "+" sign, printed on puzzle pieces. These numbers never correspond to a card in the deck. They must be added to a number of the other color (the golden rule!).
You have restored power (card 25) and obtained a modifier (+6) that you can now add to a red number, instead of using the card's number (25).
Machines
To use the machines (green symbol), you must enter the card's number into the app (in the case of a letter, the number below it). The app will show you the machine and buttons you can press to manipulate it. Once you've found the correct way to use it, the app will tell you how to continue the game.
Later in the game, you discover how to use machine 69. You need to place a wire between the two center pins. So you press the button in the app and enter number 69. You then select the two center buttons and confirm, which gives you the red number. You can now combine this number with that of the wire (16) and take card 25 (16+9).
Attention: misusing a machine can cause you to lose time, and it is sometimes necessary to progress further in the adventure to understand a machine.
Hidden Objects
During a game, not all objects are always visible. You must therefore look carefully at the cards to sometimes find hidden letters or numbers that correspond to cards to be looked for in the deck.
Note: if you are stuck and don't know what to do next, a "Hidden Object" button is available in the app to indicate the closest hidden object based on your progress. It is also possible to activate, at the start of the game, an automatic help feature to find hidden objects. In this case, the app will show you the hidden objects after a certain amount of time.
Did you notice the hidden number (16) on the card opposite?
Hints
During the game, you have hints available to you. You can press the "Hint" button in the app at any time and ask for help by entering the number of a revealed card that is giving you trouble.
For cards with a letter, you must enter the number printed below that letter to get the hint. If there is no number below the letter, you cannot request a hint for that card.
Note: for certain cards, the app will offer you a second hint if the first isn't enough, and sometimes even the solution. Don't forget that all the solutions are also provided in the box.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as you manage to solve the last puzzle and stop the timer. You then access your score (between 0 and 5 stars).
App
The UNLOCK! app can be downloaded for free from the App Store and Google Play. It manages your time, penalties, machines, and hints. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY WITHOUT THIS APP (but once downloaded, no internet connection is needed during play). When you launch the app, you must choose a language, then you will be directed to an adventure selection screen.
Adventure Selection
- A Settings: opens the settings window.
- B Adventure: once the box banner is unrolled, you can tap an adventure to launch it. Reminder: it is recommended to start with the Tutorial if you have never played UNLOCK! before.
- C Launch game: takes you to the game screen.
ATTENTION: the adventures are designed to be played without interruption. If you have to quit the app before the end of an adventure, be sure to resolve, in order, the machines you previously encountered so you can resume the game where you left off.
Settings
- A Music: turns the background music on/off.
- B Timer: play with or without a timer.
- C Notifications: activates/deactivates notifications.
- D Hidden objects: normal or automatic mode (recommended for beginning players).
- E Language: choice of language.
Game Screen
- A Time remaining.
- B Start/pause: lets you start the game or pause it.
- C Hint: lets you request a hint by entering the number of the card you want help with. Sometimes gives the solution if the hints aren't enough.
- D Penalty: when you reveal a Penalty card, you are generally asked to press this button. You then lose a few minutes.
- E Machine: lets you manipulate the machines (cards with the green symbol).
- F Review: lets you review hints/hidden objects already requested, as well as certain events.
- G Hidden object: lets you request help about a hidden object based on your progress in the adventure.
Hints / Machines
By pressing the "Hint" or "Machine" buttons, you get access to a numeric keypad that lets you enter the hint or Machine card number.
- A Numeric keypad: lets you enter the number. The delete key erases everything that was entered.
- B Confirm: lets you confirm the number entered and get the corresponding message.
- C Close: lets you close the numeric keypad without entering anything.
Score
Once the adventure is finished, you are automatically taken to this screen. In some cases, a message will give you the conclusion of the adventure.
- A Game data: this data summarizes the adventure. On the first line, the total time and the number of hints requested. On the second line, the time lost to penalties (in parentheses, the number of penalties) and machine errors.
- B Score: the number of stars is calculated based on your performance. It is between 0 and 5. Your score depends on the time you took as well as the number of hints requested.
- C Share: lets you send your score to your friends (requires a connection).
Player Aid
Card Types
- Object (door, key) — Combine.
- Modifier — 1 blue number to add to a red card; 1 red number to add to a blue card. Combine.
- Machine — Card number to enter into the app. Requires solving a puzzle.
- Gray cards — The other cards (place, interaction, penalty).
THE GOLDEN RULE, ONLY ONE COMBINATION IS POSSIBLE: RED NUMBER + BLUE NUMBER.
Tips
Try to get organized:
- Split up the search through the deck of cards between several players;
- Read the texts carefully and share your information;
- Discard cards as you go (and check that no mistakes were made — crossed-out numbers are the cards already used).
Still stuck?
Sometimes you need to move forward in the adventure to understand a combination or a machine. However:
- If a puzzle seems too hard, request a hint about that card (even if it lowers your final score);
- Otherwise, you may have missed a hidden object — use the "Hidden Object" button in the app.
