Do I keep control of a tile after my units leave or are destroyed?
The designer confirmed control persists and never returns to neutral.

Yes. A control marker stays with its owner until an enemy Control action flips it, so removing your units or killing the unit that took it does not change control. Once a tile has been controlled it never goes back to neutral.
