Components

1 game board, 8 crest pawns, 127 Eclipse cards (large), 24 friend cards (small), 57 scene cards (small), 2 dice, 1 pad. Pens are also required (not included).

Object of the Game

Everything begins with ... a decision. Choose either the Cullens or the Quileute as your friends. Fight the army of newborns and be the first player to collect all 8 scene cards.

Quick Rules

  • Each player chooses a crest pawn and places it on the "Start" space.
  • The player whose turn it is rolls one die and moves his or her crest pawn along the board spaces in any direction. Each space shows either a red or a white cross.
  • The player to your left draws the top Eclipse card from the stack and reads aloud the text next to the white or the red cross, depending on the board space on which your crest pawn stands. Most Eclipse cards ask you to perform an action (white cross) or to answer a question about the film (red cross). If the player drew a "story card", you may lay it in front of you, and the player to your left draws another Eclipse card from the stack.
  • If you answer correctly or succeed, you receive the scene card of the scene in which your crest pawn stands, from among the 8 scene cards. The section of the board on which your crest pawn stands shows which scene card you receive. You can collect scene cards 1 – 5 in any order and may own several of each scene. If you stand on a friend space, you may additionally take the friend card – but you may only own one of each – and as soon as you have chosen a Cullen or Quileute friend, you may not collect any friend of the other family.
  • Once you have collected scene cards 1 – 5, you may enter the inner ring to collect scene cards 6 – 8, by completing the challenges and thereby winning the fight against the newborns, Riley and Victoria.

Setup

  1. Place the game board in the middle.
  2. Each player receives a crest pawn as a game piece and places it on the "Start" space.
  3. Shuffle the Eclipse cards (large cards) and place the stack face down in the middle of the game board. Played cards are placed beside the stack, face up, as a discard pile during play.
  4. Sort the scene cards (small cards) into 8 stacks – one stack per scene.
  5. Sort the friend cards (small cards) into 6 stacks – one stack per friend.
  6. Each player receives a sheet of paper and a pen, which are not included in the game.

The Game Board

The board shows two rings – the outer ring and the inner ring – and several special spaces:

  • Scenes: There are 8 scenes – scenes 1 – 5 in the outer ring, scenes 6 – 8 in the inner ring. When you complete a challenge (a task or a question of an Eclipse card), you may always take exactly the scene card for the scene in which your crest pawn stands. If your crest pawn stands on a space of scene 2, for example, you may collect the "Scene 2" card.
  • Friends: On 6 scene spaces, 6 friends are shown: Carlisle, Rosalie and Emmett of the Cullen family, and Leah, Sam and Paul of the Quileute family. When you complete a challenge on such a friend-scene space, you receive the friend card in addition to the scene card – but only one per friend. Once you have collected a friend of one family, you may not collect any friend of the other family. There are only 4 cards per friend – so choose wisely.
  • Speed spaces: At the beginning of your turn, before you roll the die, you may return one of your collected scene cards to the general stack (if you own it more than once) and move your crest pawn with it to the next speed space to the right or left of your crest pawn. From there you begin your turn, see "1. Movement". Speed spaces are marked with the speed-space symbol shown on the board.

Turn Sequence

The youngest player begins. Play proceeds clockwise.

1. Movement

Whoever is on turn rolls one die and then moves his or her crest pawn the corresponding number of spaces along the path, in any direction. Any number of crest pawns may stand on the same space.

2. Eclipse Cards

After you have rolled and moved your crest pawn onto a space, the player to your left draws the top card of the Eclipse card stack. This may be a challenge card or a story card.

Story cards: If the player to your left draws a story card, he gives it to you. These cards are helpful. Read the card aloud and lay it face up in front of you.

  • You may own more than one story card and may receive further story cards in the same turn.
  • You may use a story card in the same turn in which you received it, or later.
  • Many story cards require you to discard them after using them once.
  • You may only use a story card during your own turn – unless the card says otherwise.

Then the player to your left draws further Eclipse cards until he has drawn a challenge card.

Challenge cards: When a challenge card is drawn, the player to your left reads aloud either the task next to the white cross or the question next to the red cross. Whether it is white or red depends on the cross shown on the board space on which your crest pawn stands.

Completing a challenge:

  • For red questions, your knowledge of the Twilight world is put to the test, and you must answer correctly.
  • White challenges vary. Some are dice duels, others test your powers of observation or call for secret votes, for which paper and pen are needed.
  • Many challenges ask for the opinions of several or all players, so everyone keeps their sheet of paper and pen ready.
  • If you complete a challenge successfully, you receive a scene card, depending on the scene in which your crest pawn stands, and possibly also a friend card (see "Friend Cards"). If the stack of this scene is empty, you may take the scene card from a fellow player who has several cards of that scene. You may own several scene cards of the same scene. At the beginning of your turn you may return a scene card that you own more than once to the general stack, in order to jump to a speed space.

Failing a challenge:

  • If you fail, you receive no scene card. If the card states consequences for failure, you must carry them out.
  • If a card instructs you to move your crest pawn during another player's turn, or to move it again after your turn, you may not attempt to complete a challenge on that space.

Your turn ends after a successful or failed challenge in any case, and the card is placed face up next to the face-down Eclipse card stack.

Friend Cards

Friend cards help you in the inner ring in the fight against the newborns, Riley and Victoria. If you have enough friend cards, you automatically pass some challenges in the inner ring. You do not need friends to enter the inner ring – but they are helpful there.

  • You may collect only one card per friend, and as soon as you own a card of one family (Cullen or Quileute), you may not collect friends of the other family.
  • There are only 4 cards per friend. Once the cards are handed out – tough luck!
  • Collecting friends is not compulsory.
  • Committing to one family and its friends can hinder challenges or render story cards ineffective. Choose wisely.

The Inner Ring

When you have collected scenes 1 – 5, you may move from the space "The Peak" into the inner ring, onto the space "The Battle Begins" (surplus dice pips are forfeited), in order to face the first newborn there – see the instructions on the space.

Movement: In the inner ring you no longer roll for movement. If you defeat an enemy, you move your crest pawn one further space at the end of your turn. If you fail, you remain on the space and try again on your next turn.

Note: If, while you are in the inner ring, an Eclipse card requires you to move your crest pawn, ignore this.

The inner ring has two paths: the Edward path and the Jacob path. After your first successful encounter with a newborn, you must choose one of the two paths and move your crest pawn one space accordingly. You must then stay on this path in the following turns until scene 8 and may not go back.

Defeating newborns and having friends: You defeat newborns in the inner ring by completing the challenge of an Eclipse card, as usual. Some newborns, as well as Riley and Victoria, belong to a scene. If you defeat one of them, you may take the corresponding scene card.

If you have collected friends, they can help you defeat newborns automatically – without having to complete the challenge of an Eclipse card. Count the friends you have collected. On the Edward path only the Cullens can help you; on the Jacob path only the Quileute can help you.

You may also use your story cards and count them as friends, or carry out and use the instructions of your story cards. Some story cards allow you to collect friends of both families. Note the text on the board space on which your crest pawn stands.

On the first space of the inner ring, "The Battle Begins", you do not, for example, have to complete a challenge of an Eclipse card if you have 1 or more friend cards – because the friend defeats the newborn automatically, and at the end of your turn you move on to the next space. If you have no friend on the first space, you can defeat the newborn by completing the challenge of an Eclipse card as usual. The other spaces of the inner ring work similarly. Against Riley and Victoria, you must even complete both challenges of an Eclipse card if you have no friend cards.

End of the Game

The winner is the player who is the first to defeat Victoria and thereby collects all 8 scene cards.

Additional Rules

Secret vote: In some challenges the players are to write something down secretly. Each player then folds his or her sheet of paper in the middle so that nobody can see what was written. Afterwards the answers are read aloud. Some challenges ask the players for a secret decision, which is only revealed later.

Rounding up: When something is "half" of a number and the result is an odd number, always round up.

Majority, even in a tie: If three fellow players choose answer "A" and two fellow players choose answer "B", and you too have voted for "B" – even then you have completed the challenge.

Optional Rules for Play with "New Moon – Biss zur Mittagsstunde"

You can play Eclipse and New Moon together. To do so, place both game boards next to each other and place the respective cards separately beside them. If a player lands on scene 8, "The Clearing", on the New Moon game board and completes the challenge successfully, he does not win. Instead, he places his crest pawn on the Start space of the Eclipse game board – and play goes on. The Edward and Bella cards count as friends only in the encounter with Victoria.

If you do not have New Moon, you can find it in all toy stores or on the internet.
