Object of the Game
You win by scoring the most points. There are three ways to score:
- Collecting Tour cards.
- Collecting Encounter cards whose powers start with "At game's end…"
- Collecting Souvenir cubes in your Suitcase.
Game Set-Up
This is the set-up layout for a four player game.
- Place the board on the table.
- Shuffle the Tour card deck, divide it approximately in half, and place one half here, image-side up. Then draw 3 cards from it and place them to its right, to form the 4-card Tour row.
- Place the other half of the Tour card deck text-side up here. Then draw 3 cards from it and place them to its right, to form the 4-card Encounter row.
- Shuffle the Itinerary deck and place it face up here. Then draw 4 cards from it and place them face up to its right, forming a 5-card row.
- Place the cube/token tray next to the board.
- Give each player a Quick Guide card, one Frequent Flyer token, one Money-Tracker Coin set to zero, and a Suitcase and Trekker of the same color.
Playing the Game
Players take turns in clockwise order. The youngest player takes the First Player Marker and goes first. Before your first turn, place your Trekker on any of the 6 airports on the board.
On your turn, take the following steps, in order:
1. Choose an Itinerary, do what it says, and discard it.
Choose an Itinerary from one of the five Itineraries in the Itinerary row (including the one on top of the deck).
Each Itinerary has three actions on it, which you must take in order from top to bottom. We'll explain using this Itinerary as an example.
A. First, move your Trekker on the map exactly the number of spaces the Itinerary says. In this example, 3 spaces.
Here the Orange Trekker moves 3 spaces from Zhangjiajie to Ha Long Bay, passing through the Green Trekker's location on the way.
- A. You may pass through or land on a location occupied by another player, as shown above.
- B. You may not return to or pass through a location you started on or passed through this turn.
- C. You may fly from one airport to any other, using one step in your Itinerary movement to do so. Each time you do, you must pay $1.
B. Second, gain money (this represents withdrawing money from your bank account): add the amount listed on the Itinerary to your Money-Tracker Coin (up to $20 max). In this example, $2.
C. Third, gain Souvenirs if possible: if your Trekker is now in any continent pictured on your Itinerary, gain the Souvenir cubes pictured and add them to the left-most empty spots of the matching color row in your Suitcase.
In the example Itinerary above, you gain 1 black cube if you're in Africa or Oceania. You'd place it in the left-most empty space in the black Suitcase row.
After finishing your Itinerary, discard it to the Itinerary Discard area on the board.
Suitcases are important for two reasons:
- At game's end, you'll get points corresponding to the farthest-right completely filled column in your Suitcase. The points you'll get are shown beneath that column.
- There are icons in your Suitcase. When you cover one with a Souvenir, you gain an Itinerary token with that icon, if one is available. Itinerary tokens are powerful.
In the below example, a yellow cube covers a money symbol, so the orange player gains a yellow Money token.
Itinerary Tokens
There are 4 types of Itinerary tokens you can gain. Each gives you a power you can use on any future turn:
- Frequent Flyer token (airplane): Before you take an Itinerary, return a Frequent Flyer token to the supply to fly from your current location to any airport for free.
- Move token (runner): When making your Itinerary moves, return a Move token to move one extra space, following normal movement rules.
- Money token ($): When gaining money from your Itinerary, return a Money token to get that same amount again.
- Souvenir token (cube): When gaining Souvenirs from an Itinerary, return a Souvenir token to gain that same number and color of cubes again.
You may return as many Itinerary tokens as you want on a turn, except ones you gained on that turn.
2. Take an Encounter card if you're in its location.
Encounter cards are the cards with the text on them. There are always 4 available at the start of your turn (including the one on top of the deck).
After completing an Itinerary, if you're in an available Encounter's exact location, gain it. For example, if your Trekker is at Victoria Falls in Africa, you gain the card here.
Save space on the table by accumulating Encounters in a column so only the powers show.
Each Encounter gives you a one-time-use power you can use on any future turn. To use one, do what the power says and then discard the card to the Encounter Discard area on the board.
- You may never use an Encounter's power on the turn you gained it.
- You may use multiple Encounters on a turn.
- You may use each at any time on your turn unless it says otherwise.
- Some Encounters give you points at game's end. These all start with "At games's end…"
3. Pay for a Tour card if you're in its location and can afford it.
Tour cards are the cards with location art on them. There are always 4 available at the start of your turn (including the one on top of the deck).
After completing an Itinerary, if you're in an available Tour's exact location and have enough money, you may pay for the Tour card by subtracting its cost on your Money-Tracker Coin, and gain the card.
For example, if your Trekker is at Lençóis Maranhenses, you could pay $6 and gain the card here.
Save space on the table by accumulating Tours in a column so only the points show.
Example:
- Each Tour has a cost. The Tour at Torres Del Paine to the left costs $9.
- Each has a point value. This Tour is worth 22 points.
At the end of your turn:
- Draw from the Itinerary deck to refill the Itinerary row. If the deck runs out, shuffle the Itinerary discard pile to make a new deck.
- If needed, draw from the Encounter deck to refill the Encounter row. If the deck runs out, shuffle the Encounter discard pile to make a new deck.
- If needed, draw from the Tour deck to refill the Tour row.
Game End
The game end is signaled when any player has a certain number of Tours, depending on player count:
- 2-3 PLAYER GAME: when any player takes their 5th Tour.
- 4-5 PLAYER GAME: when any player takes their 4th Tour.
Finish the round so everyone has taken the same number of turns, then score.
Scoring
Your final score consists of:
- Points from your Tours.
- Points from your endgame Encounter cards.
- Points from your Suitcase: you get the points listed at the bottom of the right-most filled vertical column of your Suitcase.
The player with the most points wins.
In case of a tie, the player with the most money wins. If there's still a tie, the tied players share victory.
Want a longer game?
Set the number of Tours needed to trigger the end higher. Feel free to set it up to 6 Tours (something we often do in 2-player games).
FAQ
Due to an Encounter power, I removed a Souvenir from my Suitcase and it uncovered an icon.
- Do I lose the Itinerary token I earned if I still have it? No
- If I cover that icon again later, will I get another Itinerary token? Yes
Are there any circumstances under which I can use an Encounter power or Itinerary token on the turn I gained it? No
Can my Trekker ever end its movement on the space it started on? Only if you use an Encounter power that gives you the ability not to move at all.
Can I ever move my Trekker after gaining an Encounter or taking a Tour? Only if you use an Encounter card that gives you the power to do so.
Can I use an Encounter power at any time during my turn? Yes, unless the power itself tells you otherwise.
Can I ever take a Tour and gain an Encounter card on the same turn? Only if you have an Encounter card that makes it possible.
For the purpose of movement, are airports treated the same as other locations? Yes. You can land on or pass through an airport the same as other locations. The only difference is you can fly from an airport to any other airport by paying $1, using one movement step to do so.

Solo Mode
1 Player Game Rules
Travel the globe as a solo backpacker and go on a life-changing journey. Get ahead of the trends before the Tourists arrive and make everything harder!
The game is played in turns alternating between you and an automated opponent that controls four Tourists. Your goal is to complete all the goals on your Difficulty card with the best score possible before the Tourists overwhelm you.
Solo Set-Up
- Take a Solo Mode Difficulty card with the level you would like to play on (choose Easy for your first game). Place the other Difficulty cards back in the box.
- In solo mode, orient all Tour, Encounter, and Itinerary cards toward you next to the board, as shown.
- Shuffle the Tour cards. Reveal Tour cards one at a time from your deck until you find Tours with costs matching the costs listed on your chosen Difficulty card from step 1. Place them in a row. The number of cards in the row will vary depending on Difficulty (the easy mode shown has 4 cards, with costs $5, $5, $6, and $7).
- Reshuffle the unused Tour cards and flip them to the Encounter side. Place them in the Encounter row, revealing 4 as usual.
- Shuffle and create the Itinerary row as usual.
- Shuffle the deck of Opponent cards and place it Trekker side face down beneath the itinerary row. Flip the top card and place it to the deck's right to create a discard pile.
- Place the Pink, Orange, Brown, and Tan Trekker in an area you designate for the opponent.
- Take the Teal Trekker and Suitcase, a Money Tracker, a Frequent Flyer token, and the Quick Guides for Solo and Base Game.
- Place the Trekker matching the current faceup Opponent card, onto the game board location corresponding to the leftmost Encounter card currently in the Encounter row. Take the Solo Rules Reference cards. Now you're ready to play!
Gameplay
You and the automated opponent will take turns. You'll take the first turn. Your actions are the same as in the base game, only in order to win you must complete a set of objectives listed on your chosen Difficulty card.
Difficulty cards tell you how many Tours you must take and how many souvenirs you must collect to win, plus how expensive certain Encounters will be if a Tourist gets there first. If you're able to complete what's listed on your Difficulty card, you win.
However there are multiple ways you can lose. If the Tourists either run out of cards in their draw deck or claim 7 Encounter cards, you lose.
Your Turn
Your turn is unchanged from the base game, with the following exceptions:
Tourist Trekkers are treated the same as another player in the base game's rules. You can land on or move through their location, or interact with them using Encounters just as normal.
Tourism is high in certain parts of the world at certain times, sometimes making expensive private tours your only option!
One of the most valuable actions in the solo game is to take an Encounter card that's in the same location as a Tourist. Doing so prevents that Tourist from taking it and getting closer to winning.
To take an Encounter in a Tourist's location, not only must your Trekker be at that location, you must also pay a fee called a "Tourism Tax". The amount you'll pay is on your chosen Difficulty card. If you're unable to pay the Tourism Tax, you may not take the Encounter (even if you have powers that would otherwise let you take it).
In the examples: If you wanted to take an Encounter at Angkor Wat and a Tourist was there, you'd have to pay an additional $1 (on Easy mode).
After paying the tax, bump that Tourist off the board and return it to the opponent's supply. The opponent will likely place it back on the board on a later turn. You can claim the Encounter card after paying Tourism Tax.
The Tourists' Turn
The opponent controls 4 Tourists who will travel around the world, making those locations more expensive to travel to.
Your opponent controls the Orange, Brown, Pink, and Tan Trekkers.
The Tourists turn is determined by the flip of a card from its deck, meaning you will never have to make a choice for them. You may never look through its discard pile at any point.
The opponent's turn operates as follows:
- Flip the top card of the opponent's draw deck onto its discard pile. The Tourist now displayed on the discard pile is the one the opponent will control this turn.
- Move a Tourist (either A or B will be true).
- A. If the Tourist color revealed is on the game board, the opponent claims the Encounter card matching its location and returns that Tourist to its supply. Refresh the Encounter row immediately.
- B. If the Tourist color revealed is NOT on the game board, place the matching Tourist on the location of the leftmost Encounter not occupied by another Tourist.
Tourists will only ever take Encounters, never Tours. Each Encounter it claims counts as both Encounters and Tours for the purposes of resolving your Encounter powers.
Solo Game End
The game will end after the turn (yours or the opponent's) where any of these occur:
- You collect a number of Tours and Suitcase points, per your difficulty level. (you win!)
- The Tourist is unable to draw cards from its deck. (you lose!)
- The Tourist has claimed 7 Encounter cards. (you lose!)
Whether you win or lose, go to Scoring.
Solo Scoring
Score points for:
- Points from your Tours.
- Points from your suitcase.
- 5 Points per endgame Encounter card (ignore the printed text).
- 1 point per extra souvenir above what your Difficulty card requires.
- 1 Point per leftover dollar and Itinerary token you haven't spent.
Write your score into the highscore table. Try to beat your score or go for a harder difficulty!
