Components

The following rules are used for games with 2 to 5 players. The rules for solo games are found on the back of this booklet (see Challenge Rule).

1. Object of the Game

The players build a city in which the houses are laid out in a 7 x 7 grid (seven by seven). Careful: houses of the same shape and of the same colour may not be built in the same row and column. The further the game goes, the fewer opportunities there are to place a house tile. You must therefore place as many Tiles as possible, cleverly, so that you keep as few as possible in hand, right up to the end of the game.

2. Setup

• Each player takes a Tile Stand.
• Put the 49 House Tiles into the bag, then mix them well. Without looking, draw 4 tiles from the bag and place them on your stand. Make sure the other players can only see the back (the coloured side) of your tiles. Check that you can only see the coloured side of the other players' tiles.
• The tiles are placed in the middle of the table to build the city. Place one tile face up, drawn at random, in the upper left corner of the play area. This is the Pioneering Tile.
• Choose the first player.

3. Playing a Turn

Turns are taken clockwise. Follow steps ① to ⑤ on your turn.

① Check whether you can exchange one of your tiles

You may exchange your tiles if 3 or more of them are of the same colour or of the same shape (you may also choose not to exchange them).

If you wish to make an exchange, show the other players your 3 tiles and put them back into the bag, shake it, and blindly draw 3 new ones. If you have 4 identical tiles, choose 3 of them and exchange those. You may exchange again if, after the initial exchange, you still have more than 3 identical tiles.

② Place a house tile in the city

Choose a tile and place it in the city, respecting the following conditions.

1. At least one side of the tile must touch another house in the city.

If no side touches another tile, you may not place it there.

2. A house tile may not be placed if a tile of the same shape or colour is already in the row or the column concerned.

You may not place your tile here because a tile of the same colour is in this row.

You may not place your tile here because a tile of the same shape is in this column.

3. You may place up to 7 tiles in a column and in a row.

You may not place tiles above, or to the left of, the Pioneering Tile.

You may not create an 8th column.

If you place a tile incorrectly...

Do not hesitate to call out a player who has placed a tile incorrectly. That player must then place it correctly or change the tile.

If play continues and you notice long afterwards that a tile has been placed incorrectly, turn it over immediately. That tile is then considered to have no shape and no colour, and you can no longer cover it.

③ Draw a tile from the bag

Take a tile from the bag and put it on your stand.

If there are no tiles left in the bag, you cannot refill your hand. You will be unable to follow step ④. Go to step ⑤.

④ Choose to discard a tile

If you choose to discard a tile from your hand, take it without showing it to the other players and put it back into the bag.

It is entirely to your advantage to play longer than the others, but keep in mind that you must have as few tiles as possible in hand at the end of the game! You may only play one tile per turn, so it is up to you to work out the best tactic and plan your turns ahead.

⑤ Pass the bag to the next player

Following clockwise order, pass the bag to the next player. Your turn is over.

4. End of the Game

• If a player can no longer place a tile, or if that player has placed all of their tiles, they leave the game after finishing step ② of section 3, "Playing a Turn".
• The game ends when no player can place any more tiles, or when all the players have placed all of their tiles.
• The priority used to determine the winner of the game is as follows: (1) > (2).
  1. The fewer tiles a player has in hand, the higher they are in the ranking.
  2. If several players finish with the same number of tiles, those who finished later are higher in the ranking.

Challenge Rule (Solo)

Setup

• Mix the 49 tiles, then form 3 equal piles with the tiles face up. Neither the bag nor the stands are used for this variant.
• Choose the Pioneering House from among the 3 piles and place it face up at the upper left side of your city.

Playing the Game

• Choose a house tile from the top of one of the 3 piles and, following the instructions of 3. "Playing a Turn" of the game rules, place the tile in your city. Repeat this action and try to place as many tiles as possible.
• Once you have chosen your tile, you may not exchange it. You may not change the position of a tile already in play.

End of the Game

• The game stops when situation A and/or B occurs.

A — If none of the tiles on top of the piles can be placed, or all the tiles have been placed in the city. You can then count each of the placed tiles and find out your Play Level.

B — You placed a tile incorrectly... You lose! Shall we start again?
