Goal
Build buildings, generate income, and let your city flourish! Your mission is clear: whoever has the most money at the end wins the game. But beware: gaps in your development bring heavy penalty costs and can jeopardize your victory!
Setup
- Each person receives a game board.
- The money is placed as a general supply in the middle.
- All players start with 10 Koku each.
- The following buildings are placed in the middle for the building supply (one set of buildings in one color per person):
- Nagaya (House): 6 per person
- Machiya (Double House): 5 per person
- Nōka (Farmer): 5 per person
- Mise (Shop): 5 per person
- Kōba (Manufactory): 5 per person
- Kura (Warehouse): 2 per person
- Umaya (Stable): 6 per person
- Teien (Garden): 6 per person
Notes
Each set of buildings has a differently colored back, so the correct quantity of buildings can be quickly selected.
Otherwise, the colors of the backs play no role; the buildings form a shared pool that everyone can draw from.
The Machiya (Double Houses) have no colored back, since they can be used by either side, and must be counted out.
Starting Buildings
- One person rolls the two dice to determine a starting square on the game board. The number die (1–6) gives the column, while the letter die (A–F) gives the row. The result shows the coordinate of the square, e.g. 3C.
- You all place one Nōka (Farmer) each on this square of your own game board.
- Then the dice are rolled again, and you place a second Nōka on the newly determined square. (There are now only 3 Nōka per person left in the pool.)
If both dice results are identical, roll again until a different square is determined.
Who Begins?
Whoever first calls out a Japanese word begins. Play proceeds clockwise.
Gameplay
Overview
In Toshi you all play simultaneously, after one person rolls the two dice each turn. First each person checks on their own game board whether the dice roll produced income, then each person may build a building on their own game board, if this is possible on the rolled square.
- The person whose turn it is rolls both dice and thereby determines the active square for this turn.
- Everyone checks on their own game board whether the square generates income (see below).
- Each person checks whether they can build.
- The dice are passed on clockwise, and the next person begins their turn.
Rolling & Building
The person whose turn it is rolls both dice. Then everyone checks whether:
- the rolled square on their own game board is undeveloped (then a building may be built there), or
- a building lies on the rolled square and its income or further effects (see below) are triggered.
Building
- The active person chooses a building from the pool, pays its cost (see building overview), and places it on the rolled square. Buildings are paid for by putting Koku from your own supply into the general supply.
- All other persons may (in clockwise order) also build on this turn, but not a building of the same category. They must choose a different building type.
Important
Double Houses (Machiya) count for the restriction on which building may be built as not Houses (Nagaya) and vice versa, even though they belong to the same category.
The Buildings
All building tiles have the same layout: top left shows the cost that must be paid for the building. On the right is the income that the tile generates, as well as further effects that are triggered by it.
Nagaya (House)
- Cost: 1 Koku
- When a square with a House is rolled, you receive 2 Koku for each Mise (Shop) on your game board.
Machiya (Double House)
- Cost: 5 Koku
- When a square with a Double House is rolled, you receive 2 Koku for each Mise (Shop) on your game board.
Nōka (Farmer)
- Cost: 6 Koku
- When an empty square is rolled in the row or column in which one or more Nōka are located, you receive 3 Koku for each Nōka in that row or column.
- If the square is rolled on which a Nōka already stands, you may immediately build on any other square (costs must be paid).
Kōba (Manufactory)
- Cost: 6 Koku
- When a square with a Kōba is rolled, you receive 2 Koku for each Nagaya and each Machiya (House/Double House) on your game board. The Machiya counts here as only one House.
Teien (Garden)
- Cost: 1 Koku per Teien
- You may build up to three Teien in one turn (adjacent, not diagonal).
- When a square with a Teien is rolled, no effect is triggered.
- Since every empty square costs 5 Koku at the end of the game, Teien can still be worthwhile.
Kura (Warehouse)
- Cost: -8 (i.e. you receive 8 Koku)
- When building a Kura, you receive a one-time 8 Koku.
- When a square with a Warehouse is rolled, you must repay 4 Koku in interest (if you don't have enough money, nothing happens).
Mise (Shop)
- Cost: 2 Koku
- When a square with a Shop is rolled, you must pay 1 Koku (if you don't have enough money, nothing happens).
Umaya (Stable)
- Cost: 0 Koku
- When a square with a Stable is rolled, you may immediately build anywhere on your board (costs must be paid).
Special Buildings
Over the entire game, each person may build a maximum of 1 special building.
Tip: For your first games, we recommend playing without special buildings.
Glockenturm (Bell Tower) (3×)
- Cost: 7 Koku (for 3 Bell Towers)
- The Bell Towers must be placed on 3 non-adjacent squares, not even diagonally.
- When a square with a Bell Tower is rolled, you receive 2 Koku for each Teien (Garden).
Kabuki (Theater)
- Cost: 7 Koku
- When a square with the Kabuki Theater is rolled, you receive 1 Koku per Nagaya/Machiya (House/Double House).
- At game end, you additionally receive 1 Koku per Nagaya/Machiya once more.
Honjin (Inn)
- Cost: 5 Koku
- When a square with a Nagaya or Machiya (House/Double House) is rolled, you receive 3 instead of 2 Koku per Mise (Shop) on your game board.
- When the Honjin is rolled, you must pay 1 Koku per Mise.
Gakumonjo (School)
- Cost: 10 Koku
- When a square with a Kōba (Manufactory) is rolled, you receive 4 instead of 2 Koku for each Nagaya and Machiya (House/Double House).
Magistratsgebäude (Magistrate's Building)
- Cost: 8 Koku
- The Magistrate's Building is placed in the top-left corner of your board (outside the playing field).
- Almost every building you purchase from now on costs 1 Koku less. The Magistrate's Building has no effect on the cost of Teien (Garden) and Kura (Warehouse).
Kawaramono-Gilde (Kawaramono Guild)
- Cost: 2 Koku
- When a square with the Kawaramono Guild is rolled, you may immediately build twice anywhere on your board (costs must be paid).
Shiro (Castle)
- Cost: 12 Koku
- When a square with the Castle is rolled, you receive 5 Koku.
- If you have the Castle on your game board, each empty square costs you only 4 Koku at game end.
Seidenraupenfarm (Silkworm Farm)
- Cost: 8 Koku
- When an empty square is rolled in the row or column in which the Silkworm Farm is located, you receive 2 Koku.
- When a square with the Silkworm Farm is rolled, you may immediately build on any other square (costs must be paid).
Wechselstube (Exchange Office)
- Cost: -16 (i.e. you receive 16 Koku)
- When building the Exchange Office, you receive a one-time 16 Koku.
- When a square with the Exchange Office is rolled, you must repay 4 Koku in interest.
Daimyo-Residenz (Daimyo Residence)
- Cost: 10 Koku
- The Daimyo Residence is placed in the top-left corner of your board (outside the playing field).
- 6 Umaya (Stables) from the supply come onto the Residence; each round you may build 1 of these Umaya for free, in addition, on any square of your game board.
- If there are not enough Umaya left in the supply, correspondingly fewer are used for building the Residence.
End
The game ends as soon as one of the following two cases occurs:
- One person has at least 100 Koku (the game ends after the building phase), or
- one game board is completely built up (the game ends after this turn).
Final Scoring
- You each determine your total money by adding up the value of your coins and subtracting 5 Koku for each empty square.
- The person with the most money wins!
- In case of a tie, the number of undeveloped squares decides: whoever has fewer wins. If there is still a tie, the tied players share the victory.
Solo Rule
Setup
- Setup in the solo game is identical to the regular game.
Game board and money:
- Take a game board and 10 Koku.
- Place all buildings of one color in the supply.
- Starting position:
- As in the multiplayer game, you place two Nōka (Farmers) randomly on the game board.
- Special buildings:
- Choose two special buildings, either randomly or deliberately. Of these, you may only build one during the game, as usual.
- Important: For the Daimyo Residence, take the 6 Umaya from a second player color, not from your own supply.
Tip: A small solo campaign, in which you play each special building once, is especially exciting.
Course of Play
- For each turn you roll, receive income, and build, if possible.
- Special feature in the solo game: if you build nothing in a round, you must remove a building tile from the supply (it is taken out of the game).
End
The game ends when either:
- you have at least 100 Koku,
- the game board is completely built up, or
- no building tile remains in the supply.
Final Scoring
- Count your total money.
- Subtract 5 Koku for each undeveloped square on your game board.
- Bonus: each building tile still remaining in the supply at game end brings you +5 Koku.
- Consult the following table to see how well you did.
