Tomato Card
Tomato cards range from 1-7, and each value has a different number of copies. See your player board to check exactly how many of each value there are.
Target Card
A target card has: 1) a basic point, 2) a quick toss point, and 3) a condition. Play tomato cards and satisfy its condition to score points.
Target condition icons
- Tomato card icon: Check each tomato card's value. You can only play one card per tomato icon.
- Two tomato cards icon: Add up the value of the tomato cards played. You can play one or more cards.
- Crossed-out 3 icon: You can't satisfy the condition with a 3.
Example: a target card showing a basic point of 3 and a quick toss point of 4, with the condition "6 ≤ tomato value ≤ 8." This target requires you to play tomato card(s) that add up to between 6 and 8.
Gameplay
Beginning with the starting player, the game proceeds to the left. On your turn, take all 3 tomato tokens and follow these 2 steps in order: 1. Action step, and 2. Basket step.
1. Action step
Place a tomato token on a festival board space to carry out that action. There are 6 spaces in total, and each space has a card. Pick up the tomatoes on pick-up spaces, and (quick) toss the tomatoes on toss spaces.
You can carry out multiple actions on the same space. In that case, stack the tokens together. Once you've placed all 3 tomato tokens, proceed to the basket step.
Pick up — "Gotta stock up before the tomatoes start flying."
Place a tomato token on the space, and take the tomato card there into your hand. Then reveal the top card from the tomato deck to replace the card.
- Don't get too greedy! At the end of your turn, if you have more than 8 cards, you have to discard cards until you have 8.
- If the tomato deck runs out of cards, immediately reshuffle the discard pile to form a new deck.
Toss — "Ready, steady, fire!"
Place a tomato token on the space, and play tomato cards from your hand to meet the condition of the target card there. You might need to play more than one tomato card to meet the condition. Once met, take the target card and slot it under your player board on the left, showing its basic point. Discard the tomato cards played.
Example: 1) Leo places a tomato token on a toss space. The target card there requires the value of the tomato cards played to add up to between 7 and 11. 2) Leo plays 2 tomato cards, a 3 and a 5, to meet its condition, and 3) takes the target card to slot it under his player board on the left.
- If someone takes a target card, immediately reveal the top card from the target deck to replace the card.
Quick toss! — "Not enough tomatoes? Just grab one and launch it!"
Place a tomato token on the space, and announce "Quick toss!" aloud.
Instead of meeting the condition with just the cards from your hand, play any number of cards—or none—and then reveal the top card from the tomato deck.
- You can reveal only one card from the tomato deck during a "Quick toss!".
- After revealing the card, you cannot play any more cards.
Then check if the card(s) played and the revealed card together meets the target card's condition.
- If the condition is met, you succeed! Take the target card and slot it under your player board on the right, showing its quick toss point. At the end of the game, you score its quick toss point instead of its basic point.
- If the condition isn't met, you fail. You can't take the target card. Leave the target card in place—you may try for it again later.
Whether you succeed or fail, discard the tomato cards played and revealed.
Example: 1) Megan places a tomato token on a toss space. The target card there requires 2 tomato cards with the same value. Megan has a 3 in hand, and she knows that there are 13 copies of 3 in the game. "There must be some 3s left in the deck." Thinking this, Megan announces "Quick toss!". 2) She plays a 3, 3) and reveals the top card from the tomato deck, and it's a 3! 4) She meets the condition, so she takes the target card to slot it under her player board on the right.
2. Basket step
After placing all 3 tomato tokens, gain a basket bonus depending on their placements, check the hand limit, and end your turn.
Basket bonus
- If all 3 tomato tokens are on the same space: Draw a card from the tomato deck.
- If 2 tomato tokens are on the same space: Flip your basket token. If you flip it to the empty side, draw a card from the tomato deck.
- If 3 tomato tokens are all on different spaces: No bonus.
Hand limit
At the end of your turn, if you have more than 8 cards, discard down to 8. You can have more than 8 cards during your turn, but not when it ends.
Game End
If you are unable to replace a target card on the festival board because the target deck is empty, finish the rest of your turn, then the game ends.
Add up the points of your target cards. The target cards on the player board's left score basic points, and those on the right score quick toss points. The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the tied players add up the tomato cards' value in their hand, and the higher player wins. If the tie is still not broken, they share the victory.
Example: target cards with basic points 2, 3, and 4 score Basic points 9 (2+3+4). Target cards with quick toss points 4, 7, 7, and 3 score Quick toss points 21 (4+7+7+3). Total points = 30.
Quick-Fire Tips to Enjoy the Tomato Festival!
- Calculate the odds of a quick toss by looking at how many of each value is in the game.
- You might get an unexpected chance if you carry out multiple actions on the same space, even if you don't like the card there.
Target condition examples
- Tomato = 5/6/7: You must play a tomato card that is a 5, 6, or 7. For this condition, you can go for a quick toss without playing any cards.
- 6 ≤ Tomato ≤ 8, crossed-out 3: You must play tomato card(s) that add up to between 6 and 8. You cannot meet this condition with a 3.
- Tomato + Tomato = 10: You must play 2 tomato cards that add up to exactly 10.
- Tomato = Tomato: You must play 2 tomato cards with the same value.
- 4 ≤ Tomato − Tomato ≤ 6: You must play 2 tomato cards, and their difference must be between 4 and 6.
- Tomato = Tomato < Tomato: You must play 3 tomato cards. Two of them must have the same value, and the other card must be larger than that value.
