Components

  • 7 Golden Mushroom Tokens
  • 3 Golden Grotto Map Cards

Setup

Before preparing the game, perform the following steps:

  1. Remove the following cards from the deck of Regular Map Cards that have Grottos (the cards are identified below by their effect, as written in the source):

    • Move one of your Heroes 1 space along the Temple Road.
    • Gain 2 Magic.
    • One of your Heroes deals 1 damage to the Goblin it is fighting.
  2. Add the 3 Golden Grotto Map Cards to the Regular Map Card decks and shuffle the deck.

Then perform the setup according to the normal rules. After that, place 1 Golden Mushroom Token next to each Goblin Portal. The Mushroom tokens must lie down to show that they are captured.

Gameplay

In addition to the normal adventures, you can rescue a Mushroom from the Goblin invaders. Keep them safe in your Castle and collect the reward at the end of the game. Or bring one to a Golden Grotto for a powerful action! But be on guard, because other players may steal them from you. You can also steal rescued Mushrooms from other players' Castles and take them for yourself.

Rescuing Mushrooms

When you defeat the Goblin guarding a Mushroom, the Mushroom is rescued. Its token is immediately placed in your Castle and stood upright.

Stealing Mushrooms

You may steal a Mushroom from another player's Castle. To do so, one of your Heroes that does not already have a Mushroom with it must be in the other player's Castle. In addition, the number of Heroes stealing Mushrooms must be greater than the number of Heroes guarding them. For example, if the other player has 1 Hero in their Castle, you must have 2 or more Heroes to steal. When moving, a Hero may take the Mushroom with them.

Escorting Mushrooms

Mushrooms may move together with Heroes, either when they have been stolen from another player's Castle or when a Hero leaves their own Castle. A Mushroom follows its Hero into any region of a Map Card that the Hero travels to.

A Hero can escort only 1 Mushroom at a time.

There is one exception: a Mushroom will NOT follow its Hero into a Temple. If this happens, the Mushroom becomes Abandoned (see below).

Abandoning Mushrooms

At any time when your Hero moves, it may abandon a Mushroom. Instead of moving together with the Hero, the Mushroom stays upright in the region of the map from which the Hero began its journey. An Abandoned Mushroom may be picked up and escorted by any Hero that moves into that region.

Exhaustion

If Exhaustion occurs (Health is reduced to 0) and the Hero escorting a Mushroom returns to the Castle, the Mushroom becomes Abandoned.

Golden Grottos

Golden Grottos provide new and powerful actions for Heroes escorting Mushrooms:

Note: the source gives the general rule for Golden Grottos but does not spell out the individual action of each Golden Grotto Map Card. The actions are as printed on the cards themselves, which were not available to the transcriber.

Passing Through Grottos

When a Hero escorting a Mushroom moves through a Map Card that has a Grotto (regular or golden), the Hero gains 1 Power for each Grotto it passes through. The Power is gained if this Hero ends its movement on a Map Card with a Grotto.

Using Mushrooms

When a Hero escorting a Mushroom moves onto a Golden Grotto Map Card, it may Use the Mushroom to activate the special action of that Golden Grotto. Used Mushrooms are discarded to the general supply next to the Goblin tokens (see below).

Placing New Mushrooms on the Land Map

If any Mushrooms are in the general supply, then when new Goblins appear, the player with the fewest defeated Goblins places used Mushroom tokens onto any Goblin Portals of their choice that do not have a Mushroom. Mushroom tokens must be placed lying down to show that they are captured. If several players are tied for the fewest Goblin tokens, the tie is resolved between those players by the lowest Spell Level, and then by the fewest completed Quests.

Game End

Each Mushroom in your Castle is worth 2 Victory Points. Mushrooms that are not in a Castle score no Victory Points, including Mushrooms that are being escorted.
