Setup
- Place the crimson silver cubes in a supply within reach of all players (not in the bag).
- Place the 2 floating fortresses at the two corners of the sea facing the Merchant Ships.
- Shuffle the 6 Crew cards into the Crew deck of the base game.
New Resource: Crimson Silver
Crimson silver is considered a wild booty.
When trading at the market, it may be exchanged in place of any booty and for any other booty. When exchanged, it is returned to its supply and never to the booty bag.
Crew Abilities
The three crew abilities printed in this expansion are:
- Storms don't rattle you while sailing. Immediately gain 1 sure-hit token. No other permanent ability.
- Reroll 1 die of your choice, once per attack.
Note on the source: the printed sheet shows these abilities next to icons (a storm icon, a sure-hit token icon, and a die icon). The Italian text does not say which of the six crew cards carries each ability, so the mapping of abilities to individual cards is not stated here.
Solo Play
Any combination of solo boards can be used with Crimson Silver, but the "Bloody" and "Red Mary" mats were designed for the mini expansion and cannot be used without it.
- Rotate both fortresses clockwise to the next map tile that serves as a corner.
- Solo Plunder: If the Solo Pirate is on a map tile with a fortress, or orthogonally adjacent to one, it plunders the fortress, gaining 1 crimson silver. Afterwards, the fortress moves normally to the next corner clockwise.
- Solo Attack: If the Solo Pirate cannot reach its target ship, as indicated on its Helm Table, check whether it can reach a floating fortress. If so, the floating fortress becomes the Solo Pirate's new target (see Floating Fortress: Attack).
Floating Fortress
If you are on a map tile with a fortress, when performing these actions you may choose this improved version:
- Plunder: gain 1 crimson silver.
- Attack: Attack the fortress as if it were a Merchant Ship. Its [strength icon not legible in the source scan] and reward (gold and legend level) match the highest Merchant card faced up under the market board. If you win, you also gain 1 crimson silver.
- Trade: trade ANY type of booty for its market value.
- Crew: before taking a card, you may discard all 3 cards and replace them for free.
- Search: you may obtain the token from an adjacent Map tile, orthogonally or diagonally.
At the end of a turn in which a fortress is used, move it to the map tile at the next corner clockwise. If there is already a fortress there, skip to the next corner. This also triggers the Navy as if the player had just crossed the Line of Ships. This can happen in addition to the normal movement of the Navy.
