Setup
Place the start piece with the enlarged version of the Cowboy Brands in the centre of the table. Each player chooses a brand as their own. In a 2 or 3 player game there will be Cowboy Brands that belong to no one. Shuffle the rest of the tiles and place face down in a stack.
Gameplay
Players take turns in a clockwise order picking up a tile from the stack and adding it to the board. Tiles can be placed anywhere as long as one of its edges is adjacent to a tile already in play.
If an area becomes fully surrounded by fences, a new town has been formed and is scored immediately as follows:
- Rank the players in the completed town from 1st (highest) to 4th (lowest) based on each player's total number of Cowboy Brands contained within the town. Players with the same number of Cowboy Brands in that town receive the same rank. Players without Cowboy Brands in that town are not ranked.
- Each player in the completed town scores points equal to the number of Cowboy Brands of the player that is ranked one lower than them.
- The lowest ranked player gets 0 points.
Scoring Example
| Rank | Player (# of Cowboy Brands) |
|---|---|
| 1st | Blue Bell (4) |
| 2nd | Broken Arrow & Green Bull (2 ea.) |
| 3rd | Sunrise (1) |
The 1st ranked Blue Bell player gets 2 points as the players that ranked 2nd both have 2 Cowboy Brands in that town. The Broken Arrow player and Green Bull player are tied for 2nd rank with 2 Cowboy Brands each so they both get 1 point as the player that ranked 3rd has 1 Cowboy Brand in that town. The Sunrise player gets 0 points as he's the lowest ranked player in that town.
Keep track of points with pen and paper.
Silver Bars
After a town is completed, if it contains 1 or more Silver Bars, the player who completed the town can relocate a tile that's already on the table. The tile to be relocated cannot be part of a completed town and it cannot cause the town to be split into 2 or more segments. If a new town is completed after relocating this tile, it is scored as above.
After all scoring and tile relocation has been completed, play continues in a clockwise order.
End of Game
Once all tiles have been played, the game is over and the player with the most points wins! Ties are broken by whomever was ranked 1st in the town that contains the highest total number of Cowboy Brands.
