Assembling the Tails
Before the first game, the Cat's and Dog's Tails should be assembled to the corresponding tiles.
- Pick out all Cat Tiles and their respective tails.
- Insert the tail to the hole at the bottom of the tile (now the cats are brought to life!)
- Repeat the above steps for the Dog Tiles.
Important: The correct attachment will show you the tail curling towards the animal pattern side of the tile after the insertion.
Comrades, curl up your tails! A protrudent tail can be an obstacle for us to lie on the bed to mark our dominancy!
For succinctness, the tails are hidden from the illustrations.
Standard Rule
Setup
- The player who is a cat owner becomes the starting player. If both players have pet cats or none of them keeps a cat, decide the starting player on a random basis.
- The starting player takes all of the Cat Tiles, while the opponent takes the 9 Dog Tiles.
- Place the base of the game box on the table. Put the Mattress Gameboard inside the base, with the A Side facing up, and place the Transparent Plastic Cover on it. This forms the bed for which the pet cats and dogs are fighting.
- Place the Paw Tokens and Claw Tokens next to the bed.
- Put the Toy Tokens and Pillow Tiles back to the game box. They will not be used in the standard rule.
Game Goal
Both cats and dogs desire to enjoy a nice sleep on the comfortable bed. Therefore, they have to occupy as much space as possible to mark the bed as their own territory! The player who owns a larger portion of the bed at the end of the game wins.
How to Play
The game will be played in turns. At the beginning, the Cat Player (Starting Player) places one of their tiles on the bed. Each tile represents a number ranging from 1 to 9.
It is required that the Cat Player's first move must choose a tile numbered 1 to 4 and place it in the initial area (as indicated in the picture in the rulebook).
In the following turns, players can choose and place, one at a time, any of their tiles in an open position on the bed. Here are the rules of tile placement:
- Tiles must be laid completely on the bed;
- The animal pattern side must face up after a tile is placed on the Gameboard;
- Players cannot skip the action as long as a valid tile placement is possible to take place.
Whenever a player cannot find a valid tile placement on their turn, the only choice for them is to pass. When both players have passed, the game ends (please refer to 'Game end & Scoring').
Note: Players are disallowed to place any tile after they skipped their turn, even if they later discover that it was possible for them to make a valid placement.
Fights between cats and dogs are cruel. There is only regret for making a wrong decision!
Game End & Scoring
Find out all individual sections, each of which should be formed by complete separation by animal tiles and/or the outer border of the bed. For every section, identify the Cat Tiles and Dog Tiles that form its boundary, and then sum up the values shown by the tiles separately for the cat's and dog's camps, whoever has the higher sum will take over that section. If there is a tie, the relevant section will be considered occupied by neither party.
Note: All sections that only contain one single grid are ignored. It's not worth counting. Even a mouse will exclaim, "What a tiny space it is!"
After the occupancy of a section is decided, the occupant counts the grids in that section and takes the corresponding Paw Tokens with their summed victory points equal to the count of the grids. Then, the occupant puts one Claw Token, with the side of their pet's camp face up, in that section to indicate the resolution there being completed.
When all resolutions are finished, players tally the victory points indicated on the Paw Tokens they gained. Whoever has more victory points is the winner. If there is a tie, the cats and dogs eventually make peace and agree to share the lovely bed for rest.
Example
- At Section 1: The value of the Cat Tiles (4 + 5) and that of the Dog Tiles (3 + 6) are the same, i.e. 9. Therefore, it is a tie and neither player can occupy the area.
- At Section 2: The total value of the Dog Tiles is 15 (i.e. 6 + 9), compared with the 16 from the Cat Tiles (9 + 7). So, the cats set up their occupancy there! After counting, the Cat Player takes Cat's Paw Tokens worth 4 victory points, and then places a Cat's Claw Token in that section.
- At Section 3, since the outer borders of the Gameboard constitute as valid separation at game-end scoring, the Dog Player is deemed having a sum of 17 (9 + 8) from their tiles, higher than the value of 16 (9 + 7) produced by the relevant Cat Tiles. Thus, the dogs occupy the four grids in that section, and the player places a Dog's Claw Token there after taking Dog's Paw Tokens worth 4 victory points.
Advanced Rule - Sweet Dreams!
The reason why the cats and dogs desire to occupy the bed is to ensure a better quality of their sleep, which is a prerequisite for sweet dreams!
In the advanced rule the toys that are coveted and dreamt by the pets are scattered on the cozy bed, the occupant of the section will collect the toys and gain bonus points.
Setup
Set up the game as usual, together with the following adjustments:
- Follow the setup of the bed in the regular mode but let the B Side of the Mattress Gameboard face up instead.
- Place the Toy Tokens next to the bed to form the supply.
- Put the 3 Pillow Tiles to their corresponding locations on the gameboard.
What will I dream about tonight...
How to Play
Play the game as usual (for reference, please go to the Standard Rule How to Play section) with an extra rule of tile placement:
- Tiles cannot be placed where the pillows are.
Scoring
Game-end conditions are identical to those of the standard rule. Same as the outer borders of the bed, the pillows will constitute as valid separation at the end of the game. Apart from scoring from the occupied sections on the bed (see the Standard Rule Game End & Scoring section), bonus points will be counted:
During the placement of Claw Tokens, if there is any pet-toy icon in the section just filled, the occupant of that section has to take as many corresponding Toy Tokens from the supply. After tallying the victory points borne by the Paw Tokens of each camp, check the amount of each type of the Toy Tokens collected by the players. A bonus of 5 victory points will be gained by the player who outnumbers in each type of Toy Tokens. Thus, the maximum bonus points that an individual player can win are 15. If there is a tie, neither player wins any bonus points from that specific type of Toy Token.
Example
The Cat Player has 3 Bone Tokens and the Dog Player has 4. Therefore, the Dog Player wins the bonus of 5 victory points. Meanwhile, both players collected the same amount of 4 Yarn Ball Tokens. So, none of them can win bonus points from this type of pet toy.
