Overview

3+ Players (But if you have more than five, check the back for team play rules.)

15 – 60 minutes (But keep playing as long as you want! We won't stop you.)

13 and up

In The Beginning... (or, How to Put a Saddle on a Jetpack Unicorn)

  1. Prepare for the game by asking people to play with you in a location of your choosing. (We suggest avoiding certain stressful environments like during an alien invasion or in a shark tank, both for this game and in general.)
  2. Shuffle the Scenario cards and set them in the center of the table.
  3. Shuffle the Transmog cards and set them next to the Scenarios.
  4. Decide how many rounds you want to play. We have conveniently provided Round cards to help you keep track (the cards aren't actually round, by the way).
    • For a 3-5 player game, 5 rounds is a good amount.
    • For a 6+ player game, 3 rounds seems to work well.
    • Of course, there are 15 Round cards, so just keep playing until you want to stop.
  5. Order the Round cards, face up, from lowest to the highest, with the highest number on the bottom (for example, if you decide to play 6 rounds, put 6 on the bottom, followed by 5, and so on until you reach 1).

Let's Get Things Moving! (or, How to Ride a Jetpack Unicorn)

  1. The person who last saw a unicorn goes first.
  2. All players draw three Transmog cards.
  3. The starting player flips the top Scenario card, sets it face-up on the table, and reads it to everyone. This player is the current Supreme High Ruler of the World, hereafter known as The Judge.
  4. The Judge now uses the imagination of the players on either side to come to a decision, by asking questions about the Scenario.
    • The Judge asks the player to their left anything they want about the left scenario on the card (it doesn't matter how ridiculous the question is).
    • That player chooses a Transmog card from their hand, and answers the question in any way they choose. The word or concept on the Transmog card must be used in the answer (although they don't need to let anyone know which Transmog card they chose... yet). It's okay to get crazy here! This is the storytelling part of the game, and the more awesome/absurd/horrifying the answers are, the more fun everyone will have!
    • The Judge repeats this question-and-answer process with the player to their right regarding the right subject (Judges, don't be lazy, think up a new question).
  5. Now that the Judge has all the important details, they make their ruling, deciding which player made the scenario cooler, worse, or weirder. The player who won reveals the Transmog card they used, and then places it face-down in front of them, adding it to their collection. The loser discards the Transmog card they played.
  6. All players draw back up to three Transmog cards.

Play Order (a recap)

  • Judge draws Scenario card and reads it aloud
  • Judge asks questions about the Scenarios
  • Players answer, using a chosen Transmog card
  • Judge makes ruling, points happen
  • Draw Transmog cards, new Judge

Rounds

After every player has been the Judge, flip the top Round card, and move on to the next round. Stop after the predetermined number of rounds, or, you know, when you want to. We're not the boss of you.

We suggest you get up at the end of every few rounds and switch spots with a random person, just to make sure you get to play with everyone there! (This is FAR less important when playing with 3 people).

Wrapping It All Up (or, Best Jetpack Unicorn Dismount Ever)

Once the final round ends, each player reveals their collected Transmog cards and adds up the points (the numbers in the upper right corner of each Transmog card). The player with the most points wins!

Team Play

Jetpack Unicorn is best when played by 3-5 players, but sometimes more people want in on the fun. This is where you should break up into teams. Each team acts as a single player, judging and answering questions together. For additional team rules (and more interactive fun), check out www.jetpack-unicorn.com.

A Bit More About the Cards (or, to really absolutely totally make sure you've got it)

Each Scenario card contains one of three conditions.

  • Which is Cooler – The players must try to convince the Judge that his or her scenario would be infinitely more awesome than the other player's scenario.
  • Which is Worse – The players must persuade the Judge that his or her scenario would be so terrible that the other scenario seems like frolicking through lilies by comparison.
  • Which is Weirder – Make it super strange, uncomfortable, or bizarre. Don't hold back – make your friends question your sanity, and do whatever you can to convince the Judge to choose your side!

Scenario cards have two opposed scenarios on the bottom left and bottom right of the card which correspond to the player the arrow is pointing to (come on, don't make us explain arrows to you).

  • The player to the Judge's left becomes the new Judge.
