Introduction

Russian Campaign II is a Second Edition kit for use with The Avalon Hill Game Company's The Russian Campaign.

NOTE: This is not a complete game unto itself. You must have The Avalon Hill Game Company's The Russian Campaign game in order to use these latest game revisions. This kit is produced in cooperation with The Russian Campaign's designer, John Edwards, and its original publisher, Jedko Games Company, Ltd. of Australia. THESE REVISIONS ARE OFFICIAL WITH THE DESIGNER AND NOT NECESSARILY WITH THE AVALON HILL GAME COMPANY. Use of them, therefore, in any U.S. game tournaments is entirely the judges discretion, although highly recommended by the designer.

John Edwards, designer of the award winning Russian Campaign game, got a chance to do what many designers hope to, and that is to release a second edition of his game. Russian Campaign II differs from The Russian Campaign primarily in that in Russian Campaign II there are no variant rules or alternative strategic scenarios.

There is no Afrika Korps counter and no German Airborne or Artillery pieces.

Furthermore, some restructuring has been done to reduce the excessive casualties in the game (particularly after 1942), adding more realism: and subtlety to play.

In order to update your Russian Campaign game into a second edition version, you need this Russian Campaign II expansion kit and the counter sheet provided.

Second Edition Rules Modifications

The rules for The Avalon Hill Game Company's The Russian Campaign apply in all cases, except for the following official changes which constitute the OFFICIAL Russian Campaign II rules:

11.2 The Hitler and Stalin pieces are not considered HQ's and move as normal units. For movement purposes consider these two units to have the advantages of mountain troops when crossing terrain.

11.3 (addition) The STAVKA headquarters (unlike Hitler and Stalin) can be replaced, but only once per year and at a cost of one replacement point.

13.8 (change, delete the old rule 13.8 and replace it with:) During any turn after 1942 the defender may choose to substitute a DR result in combat if a C or EX is rolled by the attacker.

16.2 (change) Units taking part in the 10 to 1 attack cannot move any further that impulse [sic] and may NOT attack other enemy units for the remainder of that impulse (only).

24 (change) (There are no sudden death victory conditions in Russian Campaign II. Instead, the Germans must meet certain minimum requirements or forfeit the game). The Germans lose the game if they do not control the following number of cities at the end of their second impulse on any turn during these years as follows:

  • 1942: 12 cities or 8 major cities
  • 1943: 10 cities or 6 major cities
  • 1944: 7 cities or 4 major cities

Play Aids

Players may wish to use the die cut numbers to mark the battle odds of their attacks as they move so that later, during the combat STEPS they do not have to re-calculate battle odds. If a battle is 3-1 place a 3 on the units being attacked, etc.

New Rule: Battlegroups or Remnants

  1. When Russian Guards, German Army or SS units are eliminated in EX, Dl [sic; probably DI] or DE combat results, their remnants survive, if able to retreat, and are retreated two hexes by the attacker. These battlegroups are only available if the counter mix allows and must be of the same or lower movement factor than the eliminated unit. Only one battlegroup can survive from each hex attacked.

  2. Battle groups stack like corps and, except for SS units, may not enter enemy ZOC's.

  3. Replacements may enter the game on hexes occupied by battlegroups at no movement cost. The battlegroup must be removed and must be of the same type of unit as the replacement. Russian units must be Guards, and German army and SS units are treated separately. German armor may be replaced via panzergrenadier battlegroups.

  4. (OPTIONAL) German army battlegroups may combine during any German combat phase that finds them stacked together to form replacement German army corps. Use the formula below:

Two BattlegroupsUnit FormedRestrictions
Inf + InfInfantryMay not exceed 4 CF
Inf + PzGPzG or InfNone
PzG + PzGArm or PzGMay not exceed 8 CF

New Rule: Russian Artillery Barrage

  1. The Artillery Barrage counter is used by the Russian player in the same manner as the Germans' Stuka units. The defending Axis hex must be within five hexes of the STAVKA headquarters counter.

  2. The Artillery Barrage counter can only be used during clear weather turns. It is available only once in 1943, and twice each year thereafter, once per clear weather turn, maximum.
