Object of the game
The object of the game is to search the Hobbit holes for the ten missing Dwarves. When all ten Dwarves are found the player with the most Dwarves wins the game.
Building the game
Before you start to play, build the game using the LEGO® building instructions. Check the LEGO Dice is built with these six sides.
Preparing to play
At the start of the game, everyone chooses to play either as Gandalf, Dwalin, Kili or Fili. Put any unplayed figures back in the box. Mix up the 16 beige tokens and place one facedown into each Hobbit hole. Then mix up and place the 16 green tokens on top.
Playing the game
The youngest player goes first. Then take turns clockwise. When it's your turn, roll the LEGO® Dice and move your figure THEN search for a Dwarf.
Moving your figure
Numbers: If you roll a number, move your figure EXACTLY the number of steps shown. When you move, each step must be to an adjacent Hobbit hole. You may NOT move diagonally.
Map: If you roll the map, move your figure to ANY Hobbit hole.
Search for a Dwarf
After you move your figure, use a torch to lift the top token from the Hobbit hole you moved to and show it to everyone.
A Dwarf token: If this token is a Dwarf, keep it and place it face-up in front of you. Then your turn ends.
If this is a Rune, Hobbit or Food token, place it beside the Hobbit hole you took it from. Then try to find a MATCHING token using a torch to lift the top token from any OTHER Hobbit hole. If the two tokens match, keep both of them, place them face-down in front of you and THEN take the corresponding action.
If the two tokens DON'T MATCH, put each token back into the Hobbit hole you took it from. Try to remember what you saw. You may NOT keep a Dwarf token if it was the second token you looked at!
A pair of Rune tokens: If you find two Runes, you try to summon a Dwarf. Lift the top token from any Hobbit hole and show it to everyone. If this token is a Dwarf, keep it and place it face-up in front of you. If it is a Rune, Hobbit or Food token, place it back in the Hobbit hole you took it from and try to remember what you saw.
A pair of Hobbit tokens: If you find two Hobbits, you ask them for information. Lift and SECRETLY look at ONE top token from any Hobbit hole, you may NOT keep it and must then put it back in the Hobbit hole you took it from and try to remember what you saw.
A pair of Food tokens: If you find two Food tokens, a hungry Dwarf goes looking for food. Choose another player with at least one Dwarf token. That player must put one Dwarf token back into the top of any Hobbit hole.
Winning the game
The game ends when all ten Dwarves have been found. The player with the most Dwarf tokens wins the game. In case of a tie, the tied player(s) with the most tokens win(s).
Changing the game
LEGO® Games are made to be changed. Try adding one of these new rules, or think up rules of your own. It's better if you change just one thing at a time, and always remember to make sure everyone knows the rules before you start playing!
Dwarven Greed
If the first token you reveal is a Dwarf, you may keep it and end your turn as usual OR risk it and reveal a second token from any other Hobbit hole. If the second token is also a Dwarf you may keep them both OR risk both to reveal a third token. You may reveal up to four tokens, but unless ALL of your revealed tokens are Dwarves, you must put them ALL back in the Hobbit holes you took them from, and end your turn without any tokens.
Thorin Oakenshield Arrives Last
Add Thorin to the game! Re-build one of the beige Dwarf tokens with the Thorin tile. You can only take Thorin as the last Dwarf. If you find Thorin before the other nine Dwarves have been found, you must put him back in the Hobbit hole you took him from. Then your turn ends.
Bilbo Baggins, The Burglar
Add Bilbo to the game! Re-build one of the beige Hobbit tokens with the Bilbo tile. If you find two Hobbits and one of them is Bilbo, you can ALSO take one Dwarf token from another player.
The Right Path
When you roll a number and move, each step must be to an adjacent and CONNECTED Hobbit hole. A connected Hobbit hole is one directly linked by a brown path or a grey bridge.
The Market Tent
At the start of the game remove the market tent from the middle of the board and put it back in the box. When you roll the map, flip the Hobbit holes around, so the board ends in one of the shapes shown below (shapes a to d in the booklet). Then move your figure to any Hobbit hole and search for a Dwarf.
