Game Components

  • 1 game board, 4 Art Gallery (player boards), 4 Gallerist pawns, 4 Influence markers, 1 Starting Player marker
  • 32 Work of Art tiles, 16 Artist tiles, 16 Signature tokens, 10 Artist bonus tiles
  • 60 Tickets, 40 Visitors, 1 Visitors bag, 40 Assistants (in player colors)
  • 3 Easels, 20 Reputation tiles, 8 Fame markers, 8 Celebrity tiles, 20 Promotion tokens
  • 4 Art Dealer cards, 4 Curator cards, 20 Contract cards, Money (1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100)

With the exception of money, all other components are limited. If they run out, you cannot take any more.

Setup

  • Place the game board in the middle. Place player boards around it nearest to the Gallery of the appropriate color.
  • Visitors: For 4 players, use all Visitors in the cloth bag. For 3 players, remove 2 of each type. For 2 players and Solitaire, remove 4 of each type.
  1. Place each player's Influence marker (disc) on the "10" space of the Influence Track.
  2. In the box office, place tickets of each color: 20 for 4 players, 15 for 3, 10 for 2/Solitaire.
  3. Sales office: Shuffle the contract cards, place face-down on the leftmost space. Draw the top 4 and place face-up on the four contract display spaces.
  4. Artist Colony: Shuffle all 16 Artist tiles and place them one at a time onto the board spaces matching the color and Art form. (Each Art form has 1 blue Artist and 1 red Artist. If a space is occupied, return the tile to the box and repeat.)
  5. Place the first drawn blue Artist tile face-up and mark its initial Fame with a white cube. All other Artists begin face-down. Shuffle the Artist bonus tiles and place one at random on each Artist (return the rest). Place one white Visitor (Collector) from the bag on each red Artist tile.
  6. Place both of each Artist's Signature tokens next to the corresponding Artist tile.
  7. For each Art form, shuffle the Works of Art and place each stack face-up next to the appropriate studio. Take the top tile from each stack and set aside.
  8. Place random Visitors from the bag on each topmost Work of Art equal to the number of tickets depicted on the tile.
  9. Media: Stack each of the Promotion tokens on the corresponding numbered spaces.
  10. International Market: Randomly choose 12 Reputation tiles and place one face up on each space of the upper 4 rows. (Solitaire/2-player: choose only 8 and cover the upper 4 rows of the 1st and 3rd columns only.)
  11. Shuffle the 4 Works of Art previously set aside and place one at random on each easel beside the board (3 easels for 4 players, 2 for 3, 1 for 2/Solitaire). These are Works of International renown.
  12. Place 4 random Visitors from the bag in the Plaza and 1 random Visitor in each player's Lobby.
  13. Randomly choose 4 of the remaining Reputation tiles and place one at random face-up next to each Location.
  14. Choose a start player at random. In reverse player order, each player chooses one of the Locations, places his Gallerist there, and takes the Reputation tile from that Location.

Each player sets up his Gallery: (a) Place 8 Assistants on the unemployment queue; (b) Place the remaining 2 Assistants at desks in the office; (c) Place the Reputation tile taken earlier on the 3rd Art space of his player board; (d) Take 10 money; (e) Shuffle the Art Dealer cards and deal one at random to each player; do the same with Curator cards (kept secret).

Overview of the Game

Each player tries to gain as much money as possible. Players discover Artists, commission them to create a Work of Art, and invest in them to make them more famous. They buy Works of Art, exhibit them in their Gallery, and possibly sell them. They hire Assistants and use them in the International Market to increase Reputation and bid for auctioned Art. At the end, players also score for completing the goals of their Curator and Art Dealer cards.

Players take turns clockwise. On a turn, choose one of the four Locations and one of the two available actions at that Location. There are also Executive Actions and Kicked-Out Actions.

The four Locations:

  • Artists Colony: Discover a new Artist, or buy a Work of Art from an already discovered Artist. Each Artist may only have two unsold Works at any time (their Signature tokens). Cost is based on the Artist's Fame; once bought, the Work is displayed in the player's Gallery.
  • Sales Office: Take a contract card, or (if you have the correct contract) sell one of your Works of Art. Sales value is based on the Fame level of the Artist who created it.
  • Media Center: Hire extra Assistants, or promote an Artist in the media (increasing their Fame plus a bonus).
  • International Market: Send an Assistant onto a space, gaining Influence based on the column. The upper part increases Reputation and gives an end-game goal tile; the bottom part is where players make offers on auctioned Works (the auction happens at the end of the game).

Visitors come in 3 types: Investors (brown), VIPs (pink), Collectors (white). Move Visitors by spending tickets of the appropriate color, toward your Gallery. In the Gallery, Visitors earn money and Influence and help increase an Artist's Fame.

Fame: Each discovered Artist has a marker for current Fame, which determines the sale price of their Works. Fame increases when they create a Work of Art and when promoted.

Influence: Marked on the track. Spent when promoting an Artist, taking a Location action as a Kicked-Out Action, and to gain additional money or Fame. Gained when taking an action with the Influence icon and when executing a Location action at the International Market.

Money: Used for buying Works of Art, hiring Assistants, and bidding. Gained by selling a Work of Art or taking an action with the money icon.

Gameplay

The game is played over a series of rounds, beginning with the Start Player.

Location Actions

On a player's turn, if at a Location (not Kicked-Out), he MUST MOVE his Gallerist pawn to a different Location. If a player moves from one Location to another, he may leave behind one of his Assistants on the space the Gallerist is leaving. This Assistant may come from an office desk or another Location. By leaving an Assistant behind, the player gains a Kicked-Out action if that Assistant is later displaced.

Once at the new Location, the player MUST select one of the two Location actions. If a player moves his Gallerist to a Location where another player is present, that player is Kicked-Out and performs a Kicked-Out Action after the current player finishes.

The next player to take their turn is always the player to the left of the player who performed the last Location action.

Executive Actions

In addition to a Location Action, a player may take an Executive Action (before or after the Location Action). There are 2:

Moving Visitors by offering tickets. A player may discard any number of tickets. Each ticket discarded allows moving one Visitor of the same color one space on the board TOWARDS his own Gallery. A single Visitor may be moved more than once. Discarded tickets go to a discard pile. A Visitor at the Plaza or in any Lobby may be moved by any player, but once a Visitor enters a Gallery, it cannot be moved out.

  • Collectors Rule: A player is limited in the number of Collectors he can have in his Gallery at once, equal to 1 more than the number of Works of Art he has sold.

Using a bonus from a contract card. During the game, players take contract cards placed on their player board. The bonus shown can be used by taking an Executive Action to place one of his Assistants (from office or a Location) onto the card. This bonus may only be taken once, and the Assistant remains on the card. Later, if the contract is used to sell a Work of Art, the Assistant returns to the office and the card is flipped over, depicting a new bonus that may be taken by another Executive Action.

Kicked-Out Actions

If a player moves their Gallerist to a Location where there is already another Gallerist pawn or Assistant, that piece is Kicked-Out and moved to the black space in front of the Location space. After the active player finishes their turn, the Kicked-Out player may take a Kicked-Out Action, then the piece returns home.

  • Kick out your own Assistant: possible; the Assistant returns home, but the player does not get to perform a Kicked-Out Action.

The possible Kicked-Out Actions are:

  • Reducing Influence back to the previous Fame icon to perform one of the Location's Actions.
  • Take an Executive Action.

Taking a Kicked-Out Action is optional, but the piece still goes home even if no action is performed.

Going Home: A Kicked-Out Gallerist pawn returns to his Gallery. A Kicked-Out Assistant is placed on an empty desk in the player's office; if all four desks are occupied, the Assistant is removed from the game.

End of Game

The sequence continues until at least two of the following conditions are met:

  • The box office is empty of tickets.
  • Two or more Artists have become Celebrities.
  • The bag is empty of Visitors.

As soon as two of these occur, the round continues until the last player finishes. Then, beginning with the Starting Player, each player gets one more turn as normal, except that a Kicked-Out player simply sends his Gallerist home without a Kicked-Out action. Then final scoring takes place; the player with the most money wins.

Locations

Artists Colony

Action: Discover an Artist. There are 8 Artists in each game, but only the face-up one is available at the start. To discover one:

  1. Choose any one undiscovered (face-down) Artist tile.
  2. Gain the bonus on the Artist bonus tile, then discard the bonus tile.
  3. Red Artists only: Move the Collector (white Visitor) from the Artist tile to the Plaza.
  4. Flip the Artist tile face-up.
  5. Place a Fame marker on the brown space of the Fame track on the Artist tile.
  6. Move one Signature token from that Artist onto the Commission Space at the bottom of the Art value track on the player's board.

Commission space: A player may only have one commission at any time. If he already has a Signature token on his commission space, he may not discover another Artist.

Action: Buy & exhibit a Work of Art. The cost is equal to the current Fame of the Artist, unless the player has a commission for discovering that Artist (in which case the cost equals the Artist's initial Fame). Each Artist can have only two unsold Works (Signature tokens); once both are removed, that Artist cannot produce another (except a commissioned one) until a previous work is sold. To buy:

  1. Choose an Artist with either an available Signature token or one you already have a commission for. The topmost tile of the corresponding Work of Art stack is the work created.
  2. Move all Visitors on the Work of Art to the Plaza.
  3. Pay money: if a commission, the price is the Artist's initial Fame; otherwise the Artist's current Fame. (Influence may be used to get money.)
  4. Increase the Artist's Fame by the amount depicted on the work, plus an additional 1 for each Collector in your Gallery. (Influence may be used to gain Fame.)
  5. Gain the tickets depicted on the Work of Art.
  6. Move the Work of Art to the leftmost empty slot in your Gallery and turn it face down (display side). If you have no available slot, a Work cannot be bought. (The 4th slot is only available if you are currently exhibiting a Masterpiece.)
  7. Move the Signature token from the Artist tile (or, for commissioned works, the commission space) to the right of your Art value track, matching the Artist's current star rating.
  8. Place random Visitors from the bag on the newly uncovered Work of Art equal to the tickets depicted.

If a Reputation tile was on the slot, the player places it over the displayed Work until end of turn. At end of turn, he places the tile onto an empty Reputation space on his player board, receiving the bonus printed on that space (not the tile), then moves one Visitor from his Lobby back to the Plaza. (Each player can do this only once per game, from the 3rd slot. If no empty Reputation space, discard the tile.)

Sales Office

Action: Sign a contract. Take one of the face-up contract cards and place it on your player board. Before performing this action, the player may draw 4 new contracts from the deck and place them (left to right) on top of the four current contracts (older ones are covered, not removed). If a contract is placed onto an empty slot, the player receives the ticket depicted on the slot; if placed over a previously fulfilled (face-down) contract, put that card on a discard pile (but the player does not receive the ticket again; if an Assistant was on the flipped card, it is sent home). Attention: If a player has three unfulfilled (face-up) contracts, he may not sign a new one. After the action, refill any empty display space from the deck.

Action: Sell a Work of Art. Requires a face-up contract card on the player board and a Work of Art of the matching form in the Gallery. To sell:

  1. Receive money according to the position of the Signature token on the Art Value track.
  2. Remove a Work of Art of the matching art form from the Gallery.
  3. Move any other Work in the Gallery to the left to fill gaps.
  4. Return the Signature token to the space next to the Artist tile.
  5. Move any one Visitor from the Gallery to the Plaza (if any).
  6. Flip the contract card face-down. (If an Assistant was on it, it returns home.) When flipping, orient it so the top half matches the type of Visitor moved (Influence for a VIP, Investment for an Investor). If a Collector was moved or no Visitor was moved, choose either orientation. (The bonus is not received immediately; take an Executive Action later.)

Media Center

Action: Hire Assistants. A player may hire as many Assistants as he can fit in his office (4 desks). Cost is shown on the player board and increases as the unemployment queue decreases.

  1. Move up to 4 Assistants from the top of the unemployment queue to empty desks.
  2. Pay the cost for each Assistant (Influence may be used to get money).
  3. Gain any hiring bonus depicted (tickets, Influence, or money).

Action: Promote Artist. Increase an Artist's media promotion level by 1:

  1. Spend Influence equal to the new level of the Promotion token.
  2. Return the current Promotion token (if any) to the board.
  3. Place the next level of Promotion token onto the Artist.
  4. Earn the bonus depicted above the Promotion token space (any 1 Ticket, Influence, 2 different Tickets, Investment, or Visitor).
  5. Increase the Artist's Fame by 1 plus an additional 1 for each Collector in your Gallery. (Influence may be used to gain Fame.)

If there are no Promotion tokens of the new level available, the action cannot be taken.

International Market

This Location has a table 3 columns wide, split into an upper (4-row) and lower (3-row) section. To access a column, a player must meet the requirement at the top with Visitors in his Lobby (Gallery Visitors do not count):

  • 1st column: 1 Visitor of any color.
  • 2nd column: 1 Investor and 1 VIP.
  • 3rd column: 1 Collector and also 1 Investor or 1 VIP.

Action: Take a Reputation tile (upper 4 rows). To access a row, a player must have acquired (exhibited or sold) a corresponding Work of Art. Steps:

  1. Earn the Influence shown above the column (3, 2, 1).
  2. Take the Reputation tile and place it on an empty Reputation space of your player board, immediately receiving the benefit of the covered space (not the tile itself).
  3. Move any one Visitor from your Lobby to the Plaza (if any).
  4. Place one of your Assistants onto the now-empty space (from office or a Location). Only one Assistant per space.

(A player who has not acquired a Work of Art may not choose this action, and needs an empty Reputation space.)

Action: Make an offer for Art of International Renown (lower 3 rows). Steps:

  1. Gain the Influence shown above the column (3, 2, 1).
  2. Choose a row and pay the offer value of 1, 3, or 6 money.
  3. Take the bonus shown on the space.
  4. Place one of your Assistants onto the space.

Assistants placed in the International Market stay there all game and matter for end-game scoring.

Influence

A player earns Influence from having VIPs and Collectors in his Gallery and for taking Location actions in the International Market. Influence may be spent when: taking a Location Action during a Kicked-Out Action; taking the Promotion Action; using money to buy a Work/hire/make an offer; or performing an action that increases an Artist's Fame.

Gaining money: When spending money, move your Influence disc back to the previous space showing a money icon to gain 1 money (continue for more; each money-icon space gives 1). You may not use the Influence track to gain money that is not then spent immediately. The number inside a money icon is only for endgame scoring.

Gaining Fame: When taking an action that increases an Artist's Fame, move your Influence disc back to the previous Fame-icon space to add an additional 1 Fame to the Artist (continue for more). If the marker reaches the end of the Influence track, additional Influence gained is lost.

Tickets

Whenever a player gains tickets, take them from the appropriate stack in the box office. The color must match the ticket icon; a triple-color icon lets you take any color. You can never take 2 tickets of the same color at the same time. If a color is out, remove one of any other ticket to the discard pile, then take one of the correct color from the discard pile. Once the box office is empty, take gained tickets from the discard pile. Tickets are used to move Visitors as an Executive Action.

Intermediate Scoring

At the end of the turn in which the last ticket of one color is taken from the box office (only once during the game), each player earns:

  • 2 Influence per VIP and 1 Influence per Collector in his Gallery.
  • 2 money per Investor and 1 money per Collector in his Gallery.

Fame and Celebrity Status

An Artist's Fame determines the sales value of their Works (cost to buy and money received when selling). Two ways to increase Fame: buying a Work from them, or promoting them via the media. When a player buys a Work, they track its Sales Value with the Signature token next to the Art value track; whenever the Fame increases to the next Fame symbol, adjust the Signature tokens.

If an Artist's Fame reaches 19, the Artist becomes a Celebrity and retires. The player causing this:

  1. Places a Celebrity tile over the Artist and gains 5 money.
  2. Any exhibited Works by that Artist become a Masterpiece.

Players with at least one Masterpiece may use the 4th Gallery slot (only while they still have a Masterpiece). No more Works can be bought from the Artist except a commission.

Endgame Scoring

International Market Majorities: Each column is scored separately. The player with the most Assistants in the first column (including those in the auction) receives 6 money; second most 3; third most 1. Ties: add tied positions and split (rounded down). Repeat for the second and third columns with the money shown below the table.

Auction Renowned Works of Art: The Works on the easels are auctioned. Add up each player's total offer based on Assistants on the bottom 3 rows (each worth 1, 3, or 6 by row). The player with the highest total chooses one renowned Work and places it in his Gallery (even if no spaces) or next to his player board. Ties: the player with the higher offer in the 3rd column wins (then 2nd, then 1st). The second-highest total takes another Work, and so on. Each player may take only one renowned work. When a player takes a Renowned Work, he receives money equal to its sales value as if created by the most famous discovered Artist of that Art form.

Score Reputation tiles: Each player earns money and/or Influence for each Reputation tile on their player board.

Score Exhibition: For each Work currently exhibited, receive money equal to its sales value.

Score Curator cards: Each player earns money for completed collections of Art currently exhibited (at most five exhibited Works, including at least one Masterpiece and one Auctioned Work). A single Work may be part of two collections.

Score Art Dealer cards: Each player earns money for completed sets of sold Works.

Score Influence: Each player receives money based on their position on the Influence track.

The player with the most money wins. Tiebreakers, in order: (1) most Works acquired (exhibited and sold); (2) most Visitors in his Gallery; (3) most Assistants in play. If still tied, all tied players win.

Solitaire Play

Setup: Follow normal setup with exceptions. Choose a color for the dummy player (Lacerda); place his Gallerist and all Assistants near the board. Place 10 tickets of each color in the box office. Place 8 random Reputation tiles in the 1st and 3rd columns of the top part of the International Market (middle column not used). Take 4 Visitors of each type and put them back in the box.

Gameplay: You play first. After your first turn, place Lacerda's pawn on the opposite Location. After each subsequent turn, Lacerda moves clockwise one Location, leaving an Assistant behind at each. If he kicks you out, you may take a Kicked-Out Action. Lacerda does not take Location or Executive Actions except at the International Market. If you Kick out any of Lacerda's Assistants, place it back in his supply and discard one ticket from the stack with the most tickets. If you Kicked-Out Lacerda's Gallerist, he discards one ticket and continues moving clockwise (you can't disrupt his clockwise movement).

International Market: Every time Lacerda moves to the International Market, or he/his Assistant is Kicked-Out from there, place one of his Assistants onto the table in the first available empty space (top left, moving right, then next row). The 1st Assistant goes in the top part (Reputation), the 2nd in the bottom (Auction); this alternates. If a part is filled, place on the unfilled part. When placed on a space with a Reputation tile, that tile is discarded.

End: The solo game ends at the end of the round in which the last ticket is taken from the box office. Then take one more action (at a different location). Goals to win:

  • Apprentice: 1 of each Curator and Art Dealer goal; 4+ Reputation tiles; 1+ Masterpiece; 160+ money.
  • Experienced: highest Curator goal and one Art Dealer goal; 5+ Reputation tiles; 2+ Masterpieces; 180+ money.
  • The Master Gallerist: 35+ money from Curator and Art Dealer goals; 5+ Reputation tiles; 3+ Masterpieces.
