When can you exhaust Shadow Cloak's ignore-defense effect during an engage?

You can exhaust it after you have already dealt damage, but it only reduces defense for damage you deal to that enemy later in the same engage. The same timing window as Bard's stagger and sway applies, so you can also exhaust it right after rolling.
