What do I need in order to train a higher-level skill die?

You must have trained the skill line (have its round token). For a level 2 to 4 die you also need at least one die in that line of the same level or one level lower already on your mat, so levels cannot be skipped. You pay the XP cost for each die separately, and you may untrain dice later.
