Components

  • 1 map
  • 4 polar bear pieces
  • 8 penguin pieces
  • 6 ability cards (1 each of 6 kinds)
  • 2 basic movement cards
  • 6 special movement cards (1 each of 6 kinds)

Setup

  1. The players decide by any method which of them plays the polar bears and which plays the penguins. Spread the map on the table and place it so that the side showing the icon of the animal each player controls faces that player.
  2. Place each player's pieces on the spaces of the map that are marked with footprints.
  3. Each player receives one basic movement card and places it face up in front of them.
  4. Shuffle the 12 cards made up of the special movement cards and the ability cards face down and deal 6 to each player.
  5. The polar bear player looks at the 6 cards dealt, chooses 3 and places them face down in front of them. The remaining 3 cards are put back into the box, still face down.
  6. The penguin player looks at the 6 cards dealt, chooses 3 and places them face down in front of them. The remaining 3 cards are handed, still face down, to the polar bear player.
  7. Each player turns all of the cards in front of them face up and lays them out so that the opponent can see them too. At this time, the top of the card (the side where the card name is written) faces the opponent. The polar bear player has 7 cards and the penguin player has 4 cards.

Flow of the Game

The players take turns alternately, and the game ends the moment either player satisfies a victory condition. The polar bear player takes the first turn.

What You Do on Your Turn

On your turn, do the following in order:

  1. Choose one of your pieces, and choose and use one of the movement cards (basic or special) in front of you.
  2. If the space you move to has an opponent's piece, you "Attack" that piece and remove it from the map. In addition, you may use the effect of an ability card in front of you at an appropriate time during your turn.
  • Cards, including movement cards, are not used up when used; they can be used any number of times throughout the game.
  • During the game, you cannot stack your own pieces on top of each other.

End of the Game

The penguin side and the polar bear side each have two victory conditions. The player who achieves either one first wins.

Penguin side victory conditions

  1. Reduce the polar bear pieces on the map to 1.
  2. Get one of the penguin pieces completely across to the edge of the map on the polar bear side.

Polar bear side victory conditions

  1. Reduce the penguin pieces on the map to 2.
  2. Get one of the polar bear pieces completely across to the edge of the map on the penguin side.

Special Endings

  • Resignation: At any time during the game, you may end the game by conceding victory to the opponent.
  • Repetition: If both players repeat the same moves 3 times and neither resigns, the game is forcibly won by the polar bear side.
