Can Sneak Attack ignore Ambush when no weapon can be selected?

No. The printed text was an error: Sneak Attack is meant to ignore Brutal, not Ambush, and the errata list changed the red Ambush to Brutal. If Ambush skipped the Gear up step there's no weapon to select either.
